The art of doing nothing.

Training + Diet + ______ = growth

As an athlete who’s in the thick of the best growing offseason I’ve ever had, I’m constantly searching for “what can I be better at?”

@klassic_kovacs reminds me that rest and recovery is my, and allot of athletes, weakness.

I’m constantly hell bent on pushing in the gym, focusing on mitigating daily obstacles and strict adherence to meal plans…but what I leave on the table my body usually screams at me for. Plus I usually try to misinterpret this as weakness or being lazy.

I’ve had my fair share of mornings feeling lazy and unmotivated before lifts, but I pushed myself through and those were some of my best lifts to date.

Now the feeling of needing rest is much different. Today mentally I was there, I wanted to push, progress forward in my lifts. My body had a very different feeling today. Aches that normally are not there, soreness that wasn’t rolled or stretched out as easily, overall just feeling fatigued. This is where I can listen to my body or risk injury, hindering weeks of additional progress and growth.

The missing part of your equation is probably rest and recovery if you’re nailing the rest. It’s the one aspect we all can be better at, and honestly it’s harder than any diet or training split.

Let’s talk about what’s realistic and superficial feelings you get after a workout. My posterior chain days have been hitting on another level lately, and with the recent addition of more pre-workout carbs and post-workout carbs, my lifts have only gotten better. Now, if I could walk around with a pump 24 hours a day, seven days a week, that would be amazing. However, that’s not realistic. When I look at my posing pictures after my lifts there are definitely amazing feelings swelling up inside. However, one cannot lose sight of the fact that that is not how I look on a day-to-day basis.

This does not go only for me, this applies to any content creator posting workout pictures that can make them look superficial compared to their day-to-day. So remember, when seeing pictures online, do not compare yourself to what you see, because your story, your day-to-day, and your lifts are not identical to what that person is doing, and if you think it is, you’re only lying to yourself. Be proud of what you have achieved, be proud of what you are doing, use those pictures as fuel for yourself, or don’t.

But whatever you do, do not judge yourself based on what someone else looks like..

Quite fat here compared to all my guys who just stepped on stage 😂 271lbs and still rocking this health reset.

Current MO: continue to rehab my knee so that way leg days can be 120% balls to the wall.

Once the knee is confident to push, we’ll bring chems back in and take WO weeks to hammer the quads further and see what we can make happen in the 275-280lbs range 🫡

This’ll be the longest stretch of time I’ve ever spent above 270lbs. Happy to know the weight will stick better next prep for sure!

So these past few weeks have been the most consistent with timing and execution of every single aspect of being a bodybuilder. I think my body shows it too and I’m not mad at the 230.4 this AM either.

It’s not my job as an athlete to be concerned about the scale and stress myself with wasted thoughts on “what should I do”. That’s @klassic_kovacs department and I trust my brother literally with my life, and we get a small food bump this week :). Pre and post carbs are up, fullness is going to be hella crazy and we will continue to push the body to new levels.

Very grateful to be able to elect to get up early in the AM and go train. This is a choice and one deep-rooted in purposeful intent. The goal is to progress, mentally as well as physically. My boys @j_murfff and @3p_trav helping me push past normal failure even by 1 rep/week, that’s progress. “There’s failure, then there’s David failure 😅”. Let’s keep growing!
