The Amateur
(Poem by @bhutchisonclark , images by @pxlcrafted )

There are professional mourners, of course:
The pallbearers who sleepwalk unknown burdens
Like golems without their paper commands.
The wailers who scream and ululate while rolling in the dirt.
The minister on call trotted out with four bullet points
To imbue the semblance of spirit
Into a man he did not know.
(For years, the man’s relatives would talk about
How he mispronounced the deceased’s name.)

Joseph was an amateur.
He had a good, if old, black suit, and sturdy brogues
That were mostly drained of mud.
White shirt, black cloth tie. Tall black hat.

He walked into the cemetery every day
Through a forgotten Victorian gate.
He nodded to the stones of those he had previously seen on.

Some of the gravediggers recognized him.
He nodded at them as well. No words.
He was good at solemn and dignified.
The oldest gravedigger would point him to
The newest open grave.

He stood in back,
Assuming there were enough mourners to make a “back.”
Otherwise at the end of a row that was sometimes very short.

He did not speak.
He did not sing.
He did not wail.
He always carried a black umbrella.
He never shared it.

At the end of the ceremony
He walked out by the same gate.

At the wake the men knocked back whiskeys
While the women wondered
Did anyone know that man with the umbrella?
It was the last little frisson left of the dead.
Was he an untold story
Waiting to be revealed?
A relative long forgotten?
A lover long remembered?
An old friend leaving one last touch?
An old enemy doing the same?

Joseph had no church but the cemetery.
Joseph had no community but the stones.
Instead, Joseph carried the sacrament of service
And he always fulfilled his vow.

$The Tale of the Dragon Tamers Part VIII – The Ruinbound The Ruinbound are the Dragon Tamers created for total annihilation. Thalorr forged them as the last measure, the force unleashed only when a threat must be erased without exception. Their purpose is singular. Once deployed, they do not distinguish between structures, armies, or terrain. They advance until nothing remains. Their armor carries a harsh, fractured design that reflects their role, and their presence signals that the conflict has reached a point where restraint no longer exists. Their dragons are trained for overwhelming destruction rather than controlled precision. These beasts channel cosmic energy in wide, crushing bursts and move with violent momentum that breaks the ground beneath them. When knight and dragon surge forward together, the battlefield collapses under the pressure of their assault. They do not coordinate with other divisions and they do not hold territory. They arrive only to end a threat entirely. The Ruinbound remain the darkest fail‑safe of the Dragon Tamer order.
