We’d like to take a moment to recognize our incredible staff that make Spotlight Showcase possible. Their hard work allows students from all across the state to have a unique and memorable experience at the State and beyond, and we are so incredibly grateful for their contributions!

First up, we want to thank Justin, Halle, and Renee, who have been working with Triple Threat and our School Reps to improve their skills!

We’d also like to thank our Stage Manager, Jalina, who takes the time to create and send out the schedules every morning, and keeps Spotlight Showcase behind the scenes running smoothly!

A huge thank you also goes to Brandi and Angelique, who led our Honored Technicians in their projects at the Rarig Center!

Thank you all for everything you do!

USITT Long Beach was an experience to be had!
I was a bit crazy and decided to run a day long workshop, while serving as scenic design and technology commissioner for @usitt on top of capturing a bunch of content for the @guildofscenicartists and catching up with some many old friends and making new ones- it was an incredibly busy and rewarding week.

I'm hoping next year will be just as exciting. I've got some Paint Lab ideas in the works, fingers crossed! Watch out Baltimore! #PaintLab #BackStage #theatrelife #workshop

Gahhhh. I LOVE painting and its power to create/re-create anything.

Here we have examples of Translucent painting effects from...

1. A current @utexasrtf @uttadaustin @utsdct @fineartsut @tpafabricationstudios class collaboration. Created for an RFT Production Design class, Theatre lighting students, Scenic Art students from T&D and AET, and Cinematography students, to learn how to design, paint, light and shoot into painted backdrops in 21st century film production. We are using the Hollywood style here.

2. A @usitt @guildofscenicartists 2026 Painting for the Movies professional development workshop. Here we copied a window from a 1950s MGM day/night backing from Rich Young and Pretty in @tpapresents Hollywood Backdrop Collection.

3. A 2019 @usitt translucent backdrop workshop co-taught with @cobaltstudiosbackdrops and @thejamieclausius with @q.powers and @bridgette.dennett at the University of Kentucky.

A backstage tour of Disney with some of the coolest people? Yes please! It was such a joy to nerd out over rocks and paint treatments with everyone. Special thanks to @karenmaness for making this possible.

I’m overflowing with gratitude, exhaustion, and pure joy at having spent a week with a thousand of my long distance besties—old and new ♥️ I’m so thankful to @usitt for putting so many likeminded people (who also take excessive pictures of rocks) in one place.

Behind the scenes with the magic makers 🎨 Last week Angelique Powers (our scenic charge artist) took us through the Scene Shop to see what they have been up to. How many Guys & Dolls props can you spot?

These creatives have been working with students on technical projects, rehearsals, and coaching sessions. We couldn’t be more grateful for their support!

We ALSO couldn’t be more grateful to our fabulous sponsors who allow us to continue working with these amazing artists!

My life got a shove from the universe in the form of my first @usitt conference this past March

While it was lovely to see some of my old near and dears It's a truly surreal feeling to finally meet -in person- folks you've been talking to for years online.

I was deeply inspired by the all of the sessions at the paint lab. I saw the greats in scenic art teaching and working and I saw my friends totally nail their first presentations. We had over 50 folks at our social hour, it was amazing and I couldn't get enough.

I am so grateful the @guildofscenicartists made it possible for me to attend and I look forward to the next one. Hopefully I'll be teaching one of the paint lab sessions 😍

Another special meeting coming up—next Monday, 4/14, we will be talking with @q.powers about Showcase and what you can expect if you’re going to be graduating this year or in the years to come!

This meeting will be super useful for anybody who will be participating in Showcase, and you’ll want to prepare because the event will be a great chance to network and showcase your work.

See you all on Monday!
