19 JUN 2024 — QANTAS “RETRO ROO II” AT MELBOURNE ✈️🇦🇺

🛬 Arrival — Runway 34 end

1️⃣ VH-VXQ — Qantas Boeing 737-838 “Redlands”
🎨 Retro Roo II livery

MSN: 33723 | LN: 1335
First flight: 29/05/2003
Age at capture: 21 years, 21 days
Configuration: C12 Y156
Hex: 7C6D9C
Engines: 2 × CFM56-7B26
Status at capture: Active

Captured at the Runway 34 end at Melbourne, VH-VXQ was still wearing Qantas’ distinctive Retro Roo II heritage scheme — one of the easiest 737s in the fleet to pick out from standard Silver Roo aircraft.

🔧 Underneath the retro colours is a conventional 737NG: stretched -800 fuselage, CFM56-7B26 power and the mature Boeing narrow-body architecture that became a major part of Qantas domestic operations.

By June 2024, VH-VXQ itself was already just over 21 years old, making the heritage paint particularly fitting on an aircraft with more than two decades of service behind it.

🗂️ Livery Archive Context
This capture has become more valuable with time. VH-VXQ’s Retro Roo II scheme was subsequently removed, with the aircraft repainted into the standard Qantas Silver Roo livery in January 2025.

So this isn’t simply another Qantas 737 arrival — it preserves a livery phase that has since disappeared from the aircraft.

Flying Fridays with this Absolute engineering marvel of an aircraft. The Airbus A380, The world Largest Passenger Aircraft to have ever flown. Connecting the Australia to the United Kingdom via Singapore.

News of Qantas Bringing forward the retirement of this absolute whale is definetly upsetting but it was expected as operating and filling the seats of these giants is neither easy nor economical task. It is reported that Qantas has decided to bring forth the retirement from 2032 to 2028, 4 years earlier than the previously mentioned FY32.

@qantas gentle giant , fly on a daily basis from @sydneyairport to @heathrow_airport. ✈️🦘🇦🇺🇸🇬🇬🇧.

The kangaroo #a380 with 485 passengers on board, start the long trip with a 8 hours and 20 mn journey from Sydney and makes a stop of a maximum of 2 hours at @changiairport and fly directly from there to London Heathrow on a 13 hours and 50 mn flight, to arrive in the early morning on the British soil. The travel time approximately takes 22 to 23 hours in total to complete.

The question remain: can you sustain such a long journey on a plane without over night in a 5* hotel ? 😏. Can you imagine it takes the A380 like 2 or 3 days to return back Australia 🫪

Anyhow #planelover love a #flyingwhales and love those engines sound.

Qantas Group and Melbourne Airport have reached a commercial agreement in relation to key terms that will pave the way for more flights, international lounge upgrades, check-in enhancements and delivery of the airport’s third runway. The agreement with the Qantas Group will help support Melbourne Airport’s $4.5 billion international terminal expansion program, including five additional widebody gates, supporting the Group’s long-term growth plans. In addition to the terminal expansion, the agreement includes a 15-year commitment for Melbourne Airport’s third runway, which is scheduled to open in 2031.
