COACHING REFLECTION: ARE YOU LEADING OR JUST EXERCISING AUTHORITY?

Coaches, let me ask you something.

Are your athletes responding to your leadership or reacting to your authority?

There’s a difference.

Authority comes with your position. Leadership is developed through your influence.

An athlete may obey because they fear punishment, losing playing time, or disappointing you. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they respect or trust you.

Jesus gave us a different model of leadership.

📖 Mark 10:43–45 reminds us that greatness isn’t found in exercising power over others, but in serving them.

Jesus didn’t lead through intimidation. He led through love, humility, truth, and service.

That doesn’t mean we abandon discipline, accountability, or high expectations. It means we use our authority to develop people, not simply control their behavior.

Transactional coaches demand compliance. Transformational coaches develop commitment.

One produces athletes who do what’s expected when the coach is watching.

The other develops athletes who take ownership because they’ve learned to value the standard.

As coaches, our responsibility goes beyond getting athletes to follow instructions. It’s helping them develop the character to make the right decisions even when we’re not around.

Here’s this week’s coaching challenge:

Pay attention to how your athletes respond when they make mistakes.

Do they look toward you with fear of your reaction, or with confidence that you’ll help them improve?

Because the true measure of your leadership isn’t simply whether athletes obey you.

It’s who they’re becoming under your influence.

7-11….60yds….1TD….0INTs. Lost the season opener 19-6. Hate to take L’s, but at the end of the day it’s all about development for me on the youth level. If he’s learning more each week and making fewer mistakes, that’s still a win in my book. Control the game, don’t turn the ball over, and make good decisions behind center. Proud of you. 👑 Back to the lab to prepare for week 2. 🦅
