last night was a reminder of why live music still matters. records give you the composition. live performance gives you the decisions. the pacing, the restraint, the risks, the way the music breathes and changes in the room. caught @nicholaspayton trio at @windmills.dallas @sputacular and @jaymckbass — plus finally met @philipdizack and @qdjazz in person. good to see the homie @mississippibastard out too. more than anything, i left thinking about how much of this life is simply doing the work, presenting it, learning from it, and continuing to refine. nobody has every answer before they begin. you make the statement. you put it in the world. you keep going. beautiful night with my girl. back to work. 🫡 🎺

Here’s a clip from my departmental performance of “Jamaica”by George Benson & Earl Klugh which is in my opinion one of the most niche songs I’ve listened to from this artist. Also, this my first jazz album essentially that my father put me on, so this is a very deep cut 🙂‍↕️ Hope yall enjoy it big announcement coming soon… 😛 #jazz #waves #fyp #performance jazzdrumset

This summer, just like our students, UNT Percussion faculty made music and taught all over the world! Swipe to see some of the great work that they did and meet our faculty, including a brand-new face to the program! From Associate Professor of Jazz Drumset, Quincy Davis: This summer was filled with teaching, performing, and creating. I taught at four jazz camps, including the Skidmore Jazz Institute, UNT Combo Camp, Jazz Port Townsend, and the Seiko Summer Jazz Camp, as well as the American Percussion Seminar.  Along the way, I performed locally and around the country, with stops in Michigan, New York, Florida, and Washington. I also released my new online drum course, Mastering the Swing Feel, along with my new book, The Ultimate Practice Guide.  The summer culminated in a three and a half week tour with the Seiko Summer Jazz Camp faculty, beginning in Michigan, continuing to Dizzy’s Club in New York City, and then throughout Japan, with our final performance at the Blue Note Tokyo. We wrapped up the summer with a week of teaching in Japan, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Seiko Summer Jazz Camp. Associate Professor and Percussion Area Coordinator Dave Hall travelled to Japan to clinic the Aimachi Marching Band. Dr. Hall also travelled throughout the US as part of the music design team for the 2026 DCI Champion Bluecoats. Back in Texas, Dr. Hall completed a studio recording/music video of the UNT Percussion Ensemble performing Pac-Man by UNT composition professor Panayiotis Kokoras. Stockton Helbing had a busy summer, running jazz camps in June and July with his Helbing Jazz Initiative project and then was a featured soloist for a tour with the Brass Brand of Battle Creek in Jeju, South Korea. Dr. Michael Crawford served as co-director of the UNT Marching Percussion Camp and as a member of the teaching faculty for the American Percussion Seminar, which hosted 193 high school and university percussion students from across the country this summer. In February of 2011, alongside his world percussion band D’Drum, Prof. Ed Smith performed the World Premiere of Stewart Copeland’s world percussion concerto, Gamelan D’Drum, with the Dallas Symphony Orchest
