these crayfish are only found in Australia and their color actually varies with location! (Euastacus sulcatus) 📍Lamington & Springbrook national park are the only places where u can spot BLUE ones in the rainforest creeks & trails!🦞💙✨ In New South Wales they’re red and white, while populations further west are green and brown! Thank you to @qldenvday for inviting me to celebrate Queensland’s incredible natural environment for World Environment Day🇦🇺🌏 Growing up on Gubbi Gubbu country in Queensland has been such a privilege. From ancient rainforests and stunning waterfalls to thriving coral reefs and unique wildlife, we are surrounded by some of the most beautiful biodiversity on Earth 🪸 Yet climate change, habitat loss, and unsustainable practices continue to threaten these places we love. The good news is that change is possible, and today I met so many inspiring people working tirelessly to protect our environment 🫶♻️ Want to make a difference? Choose sustainable or second-hand fashion, reduce food and water waste, plant native species, or join a local clean-up event 🥳 Queensland is a gift to the world. Happy Queensland Environment Day! 💚 Last night I had the privilege of attending the official Queensland Environment Day event hosted at the Queensland Museum Kurilpa. It was a fabulous event bringing together environmentalists passionate about protecting Queensland’s unique and precious ecosystems 🌿 Today, I reflect on how lucky we are to call the state with some of the richest biodiversity on this planet home, and I will keep working hard each and every day to protect it 🌏

Over a wonderful crisp morning, the QTFN team and friends added 55 observations on iNaturalist to the South Bank Brisbane project. Today is about CELEBRATION and the enjoyment of Queensland’s local natural wonders, UNDERSTANDING the incredible and unique environments of Queensland – and the challenges they face – and inspiring individuals to TAKE ACTION to preserve and improve the Queensland environment. 🦋 Share a story, picture or moment to celebrate Queensland Environment Day. THIS is how I’m drawing attention to our environment and the Great Barrier Reef. Inspired by nature. For Climate, For our Future for #WorldEnvironmentDay These are important themes to illustrate as we celebrate World Environment Day, @qldenvday @worldoceanday over the coming days. AND it’s great to ‘sea’ that each of this years environmental themes are the focus of each of my children’s pictures books: 🪸 tackling climate change on the Great Barrier Reef ♻️ reducing plastic pollution 🐠 protecting marine biodiversity And as a born and bred Queenslander these books also celebrate how much I love the Great Barrier Reef, which also happens to picture Queenslands environmental theme, “For the love of Queensland” ♥️ As a marine scientist and artist I have dedicated my career to sharing positive science-based stories full of hope and solutions, empowering readers of all ages that we can be the change we want to ‘sea’ in the world. My books also provide a conversation-starter about some of the big challenges facing our natural world, including climate change. My stories give parents, adults and teachers a way to have hopeful conversations to engage and educate children with #oceanoptimism And despite all the doom and gloom I believe people and nature can coexist. We just need to share these incredible underwater stories so everyone else falls in love with the reef and our oceans. claw-bearers is literally their name (Onychophora)🥹 Species : Southern Velvet Worm theyre currently abit of a weird classification rn cause the taxonomists are thinking theyre more closely related to arthropods (which include insects and crabs) than to annelids (which include your typical worms). so we technically dont call them worms but YA KNOW WHAT theyre complicated but we love them anyway 🫶🏻 #velvetworm #australia #animals #wildlife #ShotoniPhone

NETS OUT NOW. FOR WHALES. FOR ALL ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ Shark nets are not barriers. They don’t protect swimmers. Instead, they trap whales, dolphins, turtles, rays—and most sharks caught are already moving away from the beach 🦈 Over past week in my hometown, five whales—including two calves—were caught in shark nets. For many, it’s a death sentence. These nets don’t keep people safe. In the past five years, six of the nine shark attacks on Queensland’s mainland beaches happened at netted or drum-lined beaches—proving their ineffectiveness, and in some cases, increasing risk. We have ethical alternatives that protect swimmers without killing marine life. My favourite? The shark safe barrier. Want to know more?
