@rainbowfamilies_au has released the results of their recent study into the health and wellbeing of Australian LGBTQIAP+ family systems, providing seven specific recommendations. In particular, recommendation six stood out to me: improving service inclusion, in particular health systems. The report references services such as fertility, maternity, OB/GYN, and associated perinatal health services.

Through my own research and lived experience it is often not the big/obvious/shocking acts of discrimination that can be most harmful, but the consistent microaggressions that build up over time that lead to psychological distress and disengagement from healthcare services in what is already a stressful time. Perhaps it’s the obstetrician handing out information on “what dad should pack in his hospital bag” to a same-sex female parent dyad, or the midwife who consistently clarifies whether you’re the friend or sister of the birthing mother, when you’re the non-birthing parent.

I highly recommend reviewing the report as it highlights the incredible, thriving families LGBTQIAP+ parents are raising, whilst also acknowledging that increased difficulties in doing so. As part of my PhD I hope to continue building opportunities to integrate inclusive practice into healthcare systems until it becomes a routine part of care.

We join the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) in calling for independent external dispute resolution and meaningful appeal rights as Australia prepares its Digital Duty of Care legislation.

‼️As Big Tech continues to exercise unprecedented power over our digital spaces, establishing a strong, independent ombudsman is essential to protecting digital rights, ensuring accountability and safeguarding democracy.

🇦🇺LGBTQI+ community organizer and Rave Temple founder Paisley Heart lost four Instagram accounts used for community organizing, education and events.

⚠️This is one of more than 100 digital censorship cases reported to Repro Uncensored in Australia. We are supporting Paisley and other affected communities in challenging these decisions and demanding accountability.

⚖️ Independent oversight is essential to ending Big Tech’s unchecked control over digital spaces and ensuring that fundamental rights are protected.

👉Australians: Contact your MPs and Senators and call for independent dispute resolution to be included in the Digital Duty of Care.

Lots of events coming up for Newcastle Pride, including this one on Thursday 15 October. At this event, and based on my research, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges of regional queer life in a digital society. I will then be in conversation with local performer Timberlina, who will share their experience of visibility amid some challenging times for diversity. Drawing on local research and lived experiences, this conversation will examine how digital technologies are reshaping belonging, safety, recognition, and resistance for LGBTQIA+ communities in Newcastle and the Hunter, but with implications for other regions across Australia. This event is co-sponsored by The Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology, The University of Newcastle Criminology and Criminal Justice Society, The University of Newcastle EDI Unit, Watt Space Gallery, and The Press Book House, Newcastle. BTW - it is also a great opportunity to catch Night Flowers - the Damien Frost exhibition at Watts Space. Register in link in bio.

Big night at September Council tonight:

I’m excited to table the Draft Open Space, Sport and Recreation Needs Strategy 2026 for public exhibition — this document is all about social cohesion, and helps to shape our City’s recreational and community facilities and better understand how our residents use our open spaces.

Additionally, I will be raising two Notices of Motion:

🚲 Shared bikes — we need tougher State government regulations to help address the clutter and chaos of share bikes on Sydney streets.

🏳️‍🌈 Oxford Street police raids — I will be asking the Lord Mayor @clovermoore to write to the police minister asking for transparency around the two “intelligence-led” operations on LGBTIQA+ venues in the last three months.

Here we go!

NO Arrests NO Charges. NSW Police Raids on Oxford Street have happened twice now in three months.

These “intelligence-led” operations don’t feel intelligent. They feel accusatory, aggressive, intimidating and disrespectful.

I have spoken with many in the queer community, and they are feeling incredibly let down and targeted by police.

They want answers.

They want context around what’s driving these repeat raids and why they seem to be concentrated on LGBTQIA+ venues. This behaviour is breaking our local businesses and damages trust between the community and the Sydney police force.

For these reasons, I will be bringing a Notice of Motion to Monday night’s Council meeting, asking the Minister for Police for answers. We are working so hard to rebuild Sydney’s nightlife and keep Oxford Street a safe place for the LGBTIQA+ community and our allies. The police must do better to respect that. Watch this space for more details.

An unofficial @qnewsmag X @reprouncensored catch up is taking place Friday (today) at 5pm in Sydney.

Martha, founder of Repro, is in the country for a short time so we thought it would be a great way to bring those impacted together while offering a space for people to get to meet Martha while she’s here.

For those who don’t know, Repro Uncensored is a nonprofit org documenting digital censorship and supporting people and organizations affected by platform enforcement. QNews has been working alongside Repro to help document cases in Australia while campaigning for platforms like Meta to be held accountable.

If you are someone who has been targeted by a social media platform because of who you are, please feel free to join! Comment below or DM me for location 🖤
