This is a session that has my heart. Its me running a live book club year after year along with packed audiences at the #GodrejMumbaiLitFest 🔥📕

It’s called “Book in Focus”

This years book : Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi 🌠

‘Persepolis’ is an autobiographical comic in stark black and white that follows Marji from age 10 in 1980 to her departure for France at 24 in 1994. The film came in 2007; in 2024 the New York Times named both volumes to its 100 Best Books of the 21st Century.

Every year the festival contest invites creative responses to the ‘Book In Focus’. 🔖

This year readers & literature lovers & festival attendees contributed their interpretation of ‘Persepolis’ via poems, personal reflections and prose. ✍️

So first they shall read what they’ve contributed. 🎤

Then this eminent trio shall talk about their feelings on Marjane Satrapis seminal work 🙌:

Devashish Makhija works across filmmaking, fiction, poetry, children’s books and graphic art. His films include Ajji, Bhonsle and Joram.

Iffat Nawaz is a fiction & non fiction writer. Standout nonfiction includes ‘Untold Stories of Tanguar Haor’, & ‘Shurjo’s Clan’ is the fiction novel

Sarnath Banerjee is a graphic storyteller and visual artist. His books include Corridor, The Barn Owl’s Wondrous Capers & more. His 2026 book is titled ‘Absolute Jafar’
————

Post which i question all of them on what theyve spoken about like the rebuttal in a debate 😄

Then it becomes a free flowing book club where the other folks in the audience jam with me. 🎙️

It’s all for the love of books 📚❤️ please do come

Anil Dharker's legacy lives on. The Mumbai LitFest is still thriving, thanks to the efforts of Amy Fernandes and Quasar Thakore Padamsee, and their absolutely wonderful team! This year this festival is on from October 23rd to 25th, at many of the venues at NCPA. With a host of authors speaking, innumerable book releases and workshops and performances, it is next to impossible to attend all the events. We were fortunate to be there for a delightful session when Ratna Pathak Shah read from Jerry Pinto's new book Yuri in the City as well as from his earlier book, The Education of Yuri. Equally enjoyable was a talk that Dr. Mazda Turel had with Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips. I love the way Dr. Turel approaches his profession with humour and a great deal of empathy for his patients.
The highlight was a session entitled Deep Routes, in which Shashi Tharoor and Pavan Verma discussed and explored the nuances of Ancient Indian Philosophy. You cannot get two more knowledgeable and erudite speakers, than these two, to talk about this subject! It was a really engaging and informative session. The Lifetime Achievement Award is being given to Irwin Allan Sealy. Am already looking forward to next year's LitLive!!

“There are some people who are untranslatable.”
— Taslima Nasreen, French Lover

We constantly translate people into identities, nationality, language, gender, culture, profession and countless other labels. Yet no single description can capture the entirety of a human being. This line reminds me that understanding someone requires more than knowing where they belong or what they believe. Some experiences resist explanation. Some identities refuse categorisation. And perhaps respecting people begins with accepting that we may never fully understand them.

“the gateways to our hearts were so wide-open back then that anyone could just about set foot inside and take over.”
— Taslima Nasreen, My Girlhood

Childhood often leaves us with memories of extraordinary trust, curiosity and emotional openness. But growing older also teaches us how easily trust can be misunderstood or exploited. This passage makes me reflect on the delicate relationship between vulnerability and belonging. How do we remain open to people without losing our sense of self? Perhaps maturity lies in learning whom to welcome, while preserving the courage to keep our hearts open.

“Let humanity be the other name for religion.” — Taslima Nasreen, Lajja (Shame)

What if our differences in faith, identity and belief mattered less than our capacity for compassion? This line makes me question how societies define belonging, morality and community. When religious identity becomes a reason for exclusion, we risk forgetting the dignity we share as human beings. Perhaps the most meaningful expression of our values lies in how we treat those who are different from us.

“I did not want to answer any questions because I had no answers to give.”
— Taslima Nasreen, Split: A Life

We often expect people to explain their decisions, justify their emotions and provide answers to questions they may still be struggling with themselves. But silence, too, carries meaning. This line reminds me that understanding another person sometimes requires patience rather than questions. We need not comprehend every experience to respect it.

“A word takes a long year to be made, a poem an entire life.”
— Taslima Nasreen, Women and Poems

A poem may take only a moment to read, yet carry a lifetime of memories, struggles, observations and unanswered questions. These words remind me that literature is shaped by lived experiences. Behind every sentence lies a world we may never fully understand. Perhaps reading is also an exercise in empathy, learning to recognise the lives hidden between the lines.

“My sister loved the forest, not the garden;” — Taslima Nasreen, Thereafter, from The Game in Reverse

A garden is cultivated, arranged and maintained according to someone's vision. A forest grows with a freedom of its own. For me, this distinction speaks to the ways society often expects women to fit within carefully defined boundaries. It also changes how I look at nature: must everything beautiful be controlled, organised or made useful? Sometimes, freedom means allowing life to grow beyond our expectations.

I met some old book-friends or friends’ books at the Mumbai @litlivefest - @timsullivanauthor and @williamdalrymple
You are never more than six feet* from a William Dalrymple book in India. It looks like Tim Sullivan is going the same way. Lovely to see. And nice to see my own Death at the Elephant House there too.
(* may not be scientific)

There is a top team of people making the Mumbai @litlivefest run smoothly - including @mohdsaifali2022 and @__jana_riya_ How they remain so calm in the face of so many needy authors (like me), I have no idea. I wonder do they ever feel like murdering a guest speaker? Hmmm… might be an idea for a book.
