We tried something new at group training yesterday: “Musical Downs” 🎶 🎵 The goal is to get your dog to lay down as quickly as possible once the music stops!

Some snippets from a session coaching someone on how to take their first suit bite and how to move with a leg dog 🐕 Two things that are important to us: 1. We never pair a new/green dog with a brand new decoy. If neither the dog nor the decoy know what they’re doing yet, that’s a recipe for disaster - the dog learning bad habits, the dog or decoy getting injured, or the session just not being productive for either of them. 2. We never want the person taking their first bite to be hurt or scared for real. Most people are nervous at first, and that’s normal. But if everything is done in a safe and controlled way, they can get past that initial fear, realize it’s pretty fun, and hopefully want to do it again. There’s a time and place for hazing, and it’s not when someone is taking their first ever bite - that doesn’t benefit anyone. Isa is both experienced and safe (she is consistent and predictable), which makes her a good dog for someone to take their first suit bite from - though if she thinks you’re boring or distracted, she’ll try to push you around a bit (which is a good level of challenge for new decoys to work through). Selena did a great job watching, listening, learning, and then applying everything when it was her turn to take a bite. And she left wanting to do it again (not feeling traumatized or scarred for life). #thompsonk9 #dogtraining #bitework #protectiondogtraining #malinois
