I woke up this Mother’s Day with my gaze drawn to the strangest patch of light up in my loft. My first thought: angel cloud. I couldn’t make sense of it, even after I put my glasses on. Went up with my phone to inspect and, within moments, it was gone. Immediately I started missing mothers and pondering complicated mothers, all while feeling grateful for my own mom and the kids who made me one. It’s always everything at once, isn’t it? All three of my grandmothers had forms of dementia in the end, and I’ve been thinking and writing so much about memory these past few years; stolen, selective, avoided, revised. There is only today, and I’m so awed by it. Missing my girl, but she’s right where she’s supposed to be, and I’ve gotten to lay eyes on so many of my loves these last couple days. My cup runneth over, even then, always now.
