So excited to co-curate a show with @christopher.holston.art and join forces with Interior Designer @indigopruitt Marie Cloud! Come on out Nov. 13!

ANCHORS
Shareon Blenman, Arthur Brouthers, Laura Daughtridge, Kalin Devone, Sharon Dowell, Christopher Holston, Malu Marcelo Tan, and Ian Wegener

Curated by Sharon Dowell & Christopher Holston
Vignettes by Marie Cloud, Indigo Pruitt Design Studio

Opening Art Party: November Friday the 13th, 6-9 pm

Location: Slate Interiors, 2025 Thrift Rd., Ste 100 Charlotte, NC 28208

Art anchors. A living room. A lobby. A public plaza. These brilliant works hold fast on their own, or can completely transform the room around it. This holiday season, Dowell + Holston bring together an eclectic collection of Charlotte art stars with vibrant color and abstracted elements at the core of their work. From petite works to large scale showstoppers, some delve into the balance of man and nature, cull from the layered stories of life, or the pure pleasure of abstraction. For Anchors, we’ve joined forces with Marie Cloud of Indigo Pruitt Design Studio to design the vignettes that place each work in a living setting, styled from Slate’s own collection.

Come sip, celebrate and shop for art, furniture, and pieces that feel like home. Come as you are. Come colorful. Come eclectic. Expressive attire is encouraged!

As Kinship Plot continues celebrating our fifth birthday this week, today we’re highlighting five expressions of this growing work. While “programs” can sound a bit clinical, we experience each one as an overflow of who we are becoming together with a commitment to resonance, mutuality, and meaningful presence.

🏡 Our emerging Affordable Housing program is transforming underutilized church-owned land into a mixed-income community with 24 homes, shared green spaces, gathering places, supportive programming, and trauma-informed design that nurtures healing, connection, and stability in Charlotte’s housing continuum.

🌱 Our beloved Cultivation Program cares for both land and people through gardens, a food forest, ecological restoration, and hands-on learning that expands access to fresh food, gardening wisdom, and connection to the land.

🎨 Our Arts & Community programming is rooted in the belief that the arts help gather, nourish, and sustain community. Creativity is woven throughout Kinship Plot through commissioned artwork, shared spaces, learning cohorts, seasonal offerings, and Oddkin Unite experiences.

🍽️ Oddkin Unite brings together people who might not otherwise share space through curated art-and-dinner gatherings centered on hospitality, meaningful dialogue, creativity, and bridge-building across differences.

📚 Our Collaborative Learning program creates space to slow down, ask better questions, and grow together through cohorts, workshops, forest walks, contemplative practices, eco-somatic experiences, and retreats.

We hope to see you at an offering soon and thank you for celebrating this 5-year milestone with us!

As I look back over this year of art, community, and liberatory welcome through the Oddkin Unite project, I’m struck not only by the what, but by the how—work created intentionally and collaboratively, with a shared willingness to be shaped by one another. Across five gatherings, we centered the original work of local artists, including spoken word, poetry, music, painting, and sculpture. Each gathering was anchored by a shared theme rooted in the language of “un”: unraveled, unmasked, unshaken, unfinished, and unbridled—inviting honesty, reflection, and growth.

For the first time, Oddkin Unite became a traveling project. We gathered in different locations across Charlotte, hosted by community partners and friends, and in turn welcomed others—meeting people in diverse spaces and expanding the circle of participation. Culinary artistry remained central to each gathering as a practice of shared humanity; around the table, we met one another simply as people who need to eat. We feasted on a wide range of food, including Ghanaian cuisine, comfort food prepared by a self-taught home chef, thoughtfully and uniquely crafted dishes such as braised lentils and collard salad, and meals created by chefs exploring their cultural roots and inviting others into those stories through food. We also enjoyed bespoke desserts and other sweets, including our first-ever youth dessert chef.

Over the course of the year, more than 185 participants took part in Oddkin Unite gatherings. We drummed together. We shared meals and space with strangers—and with people we might not otherwise encounter. Again and again, conversations moved quickly into depth, marked by vulnerability, curiosity, and mutual respect. We experimented and practiced connection as an alternative to the separation and despair so present in our world. Through art, food, and rhythm as connective practices, meaningful relationships took root, cultivating a growing and resilient circle of care across our community.

You are invited to dinner! Our FINAL Oddkin Unite gathering of 2025 will focus on the theme “Unbridled: Letting Joy, Creativity, and Connection Flow Freely.” We’ll be featuring original work by artist Ian Wegener, whose imaginative paintings and sculptural worlds draw from nature, dreamlike states, and a meditative creative practice. Our food curator, Chef Tiffany Taylor, brings her deep Southern roots and family legacy of Black farmers and entrepreneurs to every dish she creates. Cathena Freeman of Wildflour Baking Co. will once again delight us with her beautifully crafted desserts. And as always, Ranika Chaney will guide the conversation. Link to register is in stories and our bio. We are looking forward to celebrating, feasting, exploring connection, creativity, and joy!
