THURSDAY 🗞️ DUMP
• Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Houston - he had no criminal convictions during his decades living in the U.S. and was driving a crew to a homebuilding site when he was killed, his family and a Texas congresswoman said Wednesday.

He worked for 35 years from sunrise to sunset to send all three of his American citizen sons to college. He had been working toward securing legal status in the U.S. after neglecting that for years as he built homes, his son Ronaldo Salgado said at a news conference.

• Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Tuesday that his department would redirect $1.73 billion in Biden-era grants away from establishing “DEI bike lanes” to build roads and bridges instead. 🙃

• Maine Democrats are already jockeying to replace Platner as the nominee to take on Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November. The candidates include Dan Kleban, the co-founder of Maine Beer Co., former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, and Nirav Shah, the former director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

• Three people have been charged with taking or trying to take pieces of blue sealant from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, according to court documents.

• Former Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan was spared from prison Wednesday for ushering a Mexican defendant out of her courtroom to evade U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. A federal judge fined her $5,000 and cited her otherwise law-abiding life in issuing the sentence.

There are a lot of problems in healthcare, but a big one is the lack of research around women’s health.

For far too long, research was only done on men and the results were modified slightly assuming that women are just “smaller men.” 🥴

This lack of funding, along with many other factors, has lead to women not getting the care they deserve and normalized the idea that women are just destined to endure pain.

We need more funding in women’s health and more providers getting educated about conditions impacting women. Groups like @tightlippedorg are working hard to get this done, but we need more people to join in the fight.

THURSDAY 🗞️ DUMP
• A federal judge has declined to halt President Donald Trump’s executive order creating a federal voter list and limiting mail voting, clearing the way for potential sweeping changes in how American elections are run shortly before this year’s midterm elections.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee in Washington, late Wednesday rejected the request by Democrats and civil rights groups that had argued Trump’s order would likely be found unconstitutional because the states and Congress, not the president, have the power to set election rules. Nichols agreed with the Republican Trump administration’s contention that it was too early to block the order because it has yet to be implemented.

• The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into whether E. Jean Carroll committed perjury in testimony during her lawsuits tied to sexual abuse allegations against President Donald Trump, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Carroll, a former magazine writer, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s. She was awarded $5 million in damages in 2023 by a jury that found Trump liable for sexually abusing her. The following year, Carroll won an $83 million civil judgment in a defamation case.

• Former first lady Jill Biden said she was “frightened” when watching her husband, former President Joe Biden, in his first and only debate performance during the 2024 presidential election and thought he was having a stroke on stage.

“I wasn’t horrified, I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since, never,” Biden said to CBS News Sunday Morning’s Rita Braver in an interview airing Sunday on CBS.

• New York City’s new tax on second homes will more than double property taxes owed by many wealthy luxury apartment owners, according to tax experts.

State lawmakers on Wednesday passed the tax on non-primary residences in order to help close the city’s budget gap. The so-called pied-a-terre tax will be imposed on second homes valued at $1 million or more. It’s expected to raise $500 million in revenue.

THURSDAY 🗞️ DUMP
• House lawmakers were digging into Jeffrey Epstein’s sprawling financial portfolio on Wednesday as a committee deposed his former accountant and tried to understand his connections to some of the world’s wealthiest men.

Richard Kahn, who worked closely with Epstein for years and now serves as an executor of his estate, appeared for the closed-door deposition on Capitol Hill. He told lawmakers that he had not personally seen evidence of Epstein’s sexual abuse, but provided a fuller picture of how Epstein acquired his wealth. The wealthy financier made hundreds of millions of dollars over two decades, during which he struck up friendships with some of the world’s most powerful men.

• Outdated intelligence likely led to the United States carrying out a deadly missile strike on an elementary school in Iran that killed over 165 people, many of them children, in the opening hours of the conflict, according to a U.S. official and a second person briefed on findings of a preliminary U.S military investigation into the incident.

The bombing of the school and its casualties involving children has become a focal point of the war, and if ultimately confirmed to be at the hands of the U.S., would also stand among the highest civilian casualty events caused by the American military operations in the last two decades.

• The Trump administration on Wednesday opened a new trade investigation into manufacturing in foreign countries — an effort that comes after the Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s previous use of tariffs by declaring an economic emergency.

Trump and his team have made clear that they’re seeking to replace the hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenues after the Supreme Court’s February ruling by using different laws to establish new tariffs.

• It’s still technically winter, but it’s starting to feel like summer in Southern California with forecasters predicting unseasonably hot weather, including temperatures around 93 degrees (33.8 Celsius) in downtown Los Angeles.

It’s expected to be about 20 degrees warmer than normal for mid-March, the National Weather Service said.
