We honored one of my idols and mentor Jaran at our bbq go follow @kelz142

Jaranfel “Jaran” Manzanet was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico and came to New York City in 1955. He founded the Solar Sporting Club, which grew into one of the most celebrated boxing gyms in the city. He personally trained fighters including Wilfredo Benítez, Esteban DeJesús, Alexis Argüello, Emile Griffith and José “Chegüi” Torres, and champions from Ali to Durán to Camacho passed through his gym. A 1972 article named him one of the top ten trainers in the world.

For more than fifty years his heart has been in the South Bronx. He ran La Casita Villa Puerto Rico on 142nd Street, closing the block for Puerto Rican Day with food and live music, rigged a shower onto the hydrant so the kids had somewhere to cool off and made sure nobody had to leave the neighborhood to find something to do. He trained Bronx kids from the age of seven for free and founded Semana Mundial Del Boxeo at 142nd and Brook. In 2026 Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recognized him for fifty plus years of that work. On Brook Avenue they call him the Godfather, and he is still in the gym.
