HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY @animesocialnexus🎂🥳

6 years ago today I pushed my fears aside & went out of my comfort zone to start a social group! Before Anime Social Nexus (or, then, Anime Secret Society) took off, I was selectively mute & never could’ve imagined I’d be who I am today.

As someone with severe social anxiety from years of bullying/being ostracized, it’s my biggest fear to put myself out there & let myself feel close to people. I’ve had so many people I thought were my friends leave me if they thought I was weird for my nerdy side. It led to me becoming scared to even talk or attempt making friends at all. I often hid things I loved because I wanted to fit in with the few friends I did have.

Later in high school & in college, I stopped caring so much about what people thought of me. I made some lovely friends who still wanted to keep me around despite my weirdness, like @the_gboj & @jess_amberger ❤ But I still wasn’t good at talking to new people, especially when we had no common interests.

Between 2016-2019, I was so depressed because of the world going to shiz & realizing some things I wanted to change in myself. I came out of that by learning to fully, openly be myself, especially in regard to being a queer person. When the pandemic happened soon after, I made a vow to make a change, put myself out there & attempt to make a few new friends — and the Nexus was born!

I never expected the group I started to have anime watch parties in my parents’ backyard would turn into a COMMUNITY — a safe haven/welcoming space where all kinds of people can come together, just be who they are & be proud of it.

I’ve met so many lovely, true friends who support me unconditionally—even the ones who’ve known me as 3 different genders🤣 To have so many people in my life like this is a dream come true & I’m so thankful to be a part of this. Within the past 6 years, I’ve become so much more confident in myself. I genuinely love being me — and it’s because of all of you.

I’ll continue doing my best to help all nerds find a place they feel they belong. I’m so incredibly honored to be here today, creating a space I’ve always wanted growing up for all of you ❤️🥹
