Heard we were throwing it back to 2016!

That was an adventurous year in so many ways -a girls trip to India,a month in bali designing early W&W, climbed Mt. Batur and practicing paddle surfing and kite boarding. Cody & Za were dating, we went to Chicama to surf with Henry and my Mom & I were still drinking our martinis straight up with a twist.

But now I feel like every year is a big year to be cherished … I’ve always been one to squeeze the most out of every single day -my Dad taught me that or rather that’s the way he lived everyday of his life. He taught me to give the most you can in everything you do .
I now realize the surf lessons he gave us as kids were actually life lessons - when you catch a wave you must fully commit, don’t look down, always look forward. Henry my son, named after my Dad reminds me of this when we valet surf. He loved life especially sports and he’d tell us - you’re going to fall a thousand times and that’s good cause you’ll get better. The challenge was the exciting part.

When I found some photos of my Dad who was 92 and suffering from Alzheimer’s … I just broke down. These were the best days of 2016 - the 2 of us breaking out of memory care to do some of his favorite things - swimming in the ocean, boat rides and dancing - he loved dancing, he was still strong and active but could only mumble by then. I remember so clearly looking into his bright blue eyes tearing up.
I knew he was saying, I love you Laur and then he’d squeeze my hand and dip me !! He still had it!

Ten minutes later he did not remember dancing but we connected for a precious second and that was everything. After our outings he’d always say, “ Gee whiz Laur that was the best beach day ever” And then almost immediately no memory of it . Then it hit, I’ve got to put down my phone and work harder at being fully present, look into people’s eyes and connect. Bud was still guiding me with his open heart. 🩵 Hold on tight to your friends and family. My Mom and I were holding his hand when he passed away on February 17, 2019
