I love starting a respectful dialogue! Shout out @spacekittycourtney for being so incredibly open to chatting about this on their page🫶🏼

Let’s talk about why using words like ‘poi’ or ‘totem’ in the EDM community isn’t actually a ‘cultural exchange.’ True exchange requires equal freedom—but Indigenous traditions globally were systematically criminalized and suppressed by colonial governments for generations.

A lot of well-meaning people in the scene use these terms because they want to honor the history and acknowledge past misappropriation. But rave flow arts actually evolved out of separate Western circus and performance juggling lineages. When we label a Western party hobby with an Indigenous word, we aren’t actually giving credit—we’re accidentally blurring the lines and stripping a sacred language of its true context. Let’s start calling them what they are structurally—tethered cords, orbitals, or flow lights—so we can respect the boundaries of living Indigenous cultures while keeping our own history accurate.

This may be a month late but I still cannot get over how incredible @eternalnye was & how the ending of one of the craziest years of my life was the new years celebration I had been yearning for — ✨🌟✨

I am and will forever be ETERNALLY GRATEFUL for all of you, for the rave scene, to all of the beautiful souls that have allowed me to capture them! 📸
