@nobodysdarlingbar was packed with people from all walks of life and a positive energy that was felt even before you walked in the door.

Still processing much of James Beard weekend. Chicago continued. So much warmth in the surrounding, I might stay a while. I might even believe in myself.

Baby's first Culinary Coachella ... I mean, James Beard Award weekend ... on the books 🙌

Grateful to be there as a nominee in the "Jonathan Gold Local Voice" category, for my work w/ @rtdnews & @rvamag, alongside @tacotrailofficial (@texasmonthly) & @breij (@latimesfood), who deservedly brought back the gold for Angelinos - first time in L.A. history - in honor of their hometown hero!

Thanks to @beardfoundation for the recognition. Seeing my name up there, hearing the announcer say it aloud, in a room full of folks who'd never heard of me or these Richmond publications before, was so unreal. So proud to rep our city.

Calling it an "AWARD Weekend" seems a bit inaccurate, because it's really more about the PEOPLE. I was both thrilled and starstruck running into so many fabulous food writers - luminaries of the field - out in the wild, such as: @jamilarobinson, @bill_addison, @longdrivesouth, @francis_lam, @mikejordanatl, @christina_e_cooke, @monicaengreporter, @k.a.nelson, @shokdiesel, @karenbrooks_pdx & @jdkess.

Also, when else do you get invited to a party at an unmarked loft, with a Barbie's Malibu Dreamhouse shower bar, hosted by editors of @roadsandkingdoms & @saveurmag, where you binge on @jasperhillfarm cheeses and shoot the shit with @shanefarafield? (I used to collect copies of Saveur in my college dorm room.)

Or hang with the spunky crew from @feedravenous at multiple receptions, including @jayasax, series editor of "Best American Food & Travel Writing" and all-around genius, to whom you feel like you owe your first-born for having selected your work for last year's anthology?

Or attend a @southfoodways brunch, serving caviar bumps & @vawine, where you fangirl @mashamabailey from afar but are too intimidated to say hi?

Or spend time with AAPI writer friends like @noellechun @baohaus @deannating, who also happen to be there for the festivities, enjoying such nerdy activities as pressing duck carcasses into a pan sauce?

Or wear an outfit that, if you don't mind me saying, TOTALLY SLAYED on the red carpet? (Sorry, if you want to shop my red-carpet look, you can't. I bought the jacket on clearance, final-sale only, from @jcrew.)

This weekend we were reminded of the power of food to unite and mend the fragile world we’re living in. Our food stories speak of the relationship we have with the land, with people, with systems. You can’t talk about food without talking about justice. You can’t talk about food without talking about culture, faith, identity, class. Through the many gatherings, conversations, and dining experiences, we were reminded of the power of memory and preservation. Of the stories we inherit, the stories we carry, and the stories that are still fighting to be told. Even when what we carry is at risk of being forgotten, erased, or overlooked, we keep on pushing forward.

Queers at Beards presented by @chefmavisjay was a casual and cool time celebrating our queer family and nominees. It was awesome to connect and reconnect and let loose. To find a voice and feel seen within your industry and among peers and idols is something truly special. Thanks to all that came out and for the love and visibility within our culinary community. 🫶🏽🍾🏳️‍🌈
