🩷Today was a BIG WIN for San Diego County’s youth! 🩷 The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the County budget, including the $250,000 feasibility study for a Department of Youth Development!
A heartfelt thank you to Supervisor Paloma Aguirre and Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe for championing our youth and believing in a future rooted in prevention, healing, and opportunity. To all of our youth, thank you for leading with your hearts, sharing your voices, and believing in a better future. Your courage and leadership helped make this moment possible. This victory is yours and we’re honored to continue this journey alongside you.
This victory is about more than a feasibility study. It’s about building the foundation for lasting change. While DYD isn’t here just yet, everything we’ve done throughout this campaign: organizing, listening, uplifting youth voices, building community, and leading with love—has been practice for the day it arrives.
We’re not waiting for change. We’re preparing to lead it. ##sandiegocounty #leadership #youthjustice

Too many young people enter the juvenile justice system with unmet needs and trauma, only to find themselves later entering the adult system. Our youth deserve more than punishment—they deserve healing, support, mentorship, and opportunities to thrive.
That’s why the $250,000 feasibility study is so important. It will help San Diego County better understand the needs of our youth and communities as we explore creating a Department of Youth Development (DYD)—a system focused on prevention, healing, and opportunity. Investing in our youth today helps create a future where fewer young people become trapped in a cycle of system involvement. #youthjustice #juvenilejustice #sandiegocounty #DYD #fyp

We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible speakers, panelists, volunteers, and attendees for sharing your knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. A special thank you to our amazing hosts, WOO Studios in Barrio Logan, for opening your space and helping make this year’s symposium possible.

What topics should we explore at next year’s symposium? What conversations are most urgent for artists, cultural workers, and border communities today?

Stay connected and learn more about our programs and services across the state.

Thank you for being part of this community. We look forward to continuing these conversations together.

One of the greatest reminders of why we do this work is watching the youth of our Juvenile Justice Momentum Team step into their power.
Each young person brings their own lived experience, vision, and leadership to this movement. They remind us that youth are not just our future but they are leaders today. Their voices, ideas, and courage are helping shape a better future for San Diego County. #juvenilejustice #youthjustice #youthvoices #sandiegocounty #DYD

Last night, our Juvenile Justice Momentum Team came together not only to organize and strategize, but to reflect on the kind of movement we are building and the future we envision for San Diego County’s Department of Youth Development.
If we are asking for a system that leads with healing, compassion, accountability, and youth voice, then we must model those same values within our movement. Change is not only built through advocacy, it is built through relationships, reflection, and the way we show up for one another.
We took time to pour self-love into ourselves because sustainable leadership begins within. When we care for our own hearts, we are better equipped to pour love into our communities, into San Diego County, and most importantly, into our youth. #juvenilejustice #youthjustice #sandiegocounty #leadership #fyp

San Diego County’s juvenile justice system can do better for our youth and for their families.
Too often, young people are met with punishment for behaviors rooted in trauma, mental health struggles, grief, abuse, and unmet needs. Families seeking support frequently encounter barriers when what they truly need are resources, guidance, and connection.
If we want better outcomes for youth, we must invest in healing-centered approaches that prioritize mental health, mentorship, education, positive relationships, and family support.

Our youth deserve more than punishment—they deserve healing, support, and opportunities to thrive.
Too often, behaviors rooted in trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and unmet mental health needs are met with punishment rather than care. If we truly want better outcomes for young people, we must address the underlying mental health challenges that contribute to their involvement in the juvenile justice system instead of punishing the symptoms.
That is why the $250,000 youth feasibility study currently included in the San Diego County budget is so important. Before we can build effective solutions, we must better understand who our youth are, what challenges they face, and what resources they need to succeed.
This study is a critical step toward creating a Department of Youth Development—one that invests in prevention, mental health, mentorship, education, workforce development, and community-based support. By listening to youth and centering their experiences, San Diego County has an opportunity to build systems that promote healing, growth, and long-term success.
