VHS is proud and thrilled to present The Indigenous Protocols and Storytelling Panel on October 17th as part of its 9th Edition.

Hosted by Quelemia Sparrow, this panel is envisioned as an engaging and thoughtful conversation exploring the importance of Indigenous storytelling, cultural protocols, and representation within genre spaces. The discussion will bring together Indigenous creatives and storytellers to share their experiences, perspectives, and approaches to navigating storytelling within their respective communities and professional practices.

Panelists include
Rosie Johnnie-Mills, Jules Koostachin, Renae Morriseau, and Tim Riedel.

Miyīyītamowin - the act of Joy - part 1 ✨🪶🌈

This year on summer solstice, national indigenous peoples day, world yoga day and during Pride month we gathered for my first community event powered by @lululemon 🔥🦅❤️

Joy is our birthright and natural state. During a month that I find my own identities woven through many layers, I see the yoga practice as embodying Joy. Joy as resistance, Joy as resilience, Joy as embodied generational healing, Joy as our natural state of being.

I think that even the way we heal can be tainted with the expectation that it is only shadowy and uncomfortably confronting and will take a lifetime to contend with. Though, some parts of the road might be that way when we learn to self heal, what I learn from yoga, indigenous healing principles, and being queer is that healing also comes from reclaiming and remembering our natural Joyful state of being.

We self heal when we let ourselves be together in a wholesome way, when we laugh together, when we regard each other with respect and admiration, when we play, have fun, dance. When we breathe and move with yogic and indigenous philosophy to a playlist that slaps 😏 iykyk

There is something that happens when we gather with intention to connect to and with Joy. It is mystical, it is magical, it is Awe and the most natural thing in the world. Life is a balance of being with the shadow and the light. On this day, we leaned into the light and let the Joy pour in. It felt like lightning and sparkles at the same time.

And especially to those who feel this frequency of Joy and meet me on the mat and the dance floor to feel that good medicine flow 💃🏽🪩🕺🏽

Yesterday we wrapped our writing workshop for our commissioned play Sauvagesse: a wild love story ❤️ 🎉🤩
It was an amazing week full of laughs, tears, and discovery. We can't wait to share it with you so stay tuned for future updates 👀

About the play: In 1932, in a secluded section of their reservation, two sisters, Marie and Therese, who have recently lost their mother, work to keep their small farm running during the great depression. When a young, new Indian agent shows up and wants to help them, Marie finds herself pulled into a dangerous, wild love affair, much to the confusion and annoyance of Therese. Marie does what she can to hold true to the teachings her mother passed on to her while being swept up in desire.
