Metamorphosis reflects a world in constant flux. It is a concept that demonstrates that the physical world is a space of nuance. That biology and identity are more fluid than the imposed restrictions of ideology. This shifting between physical forms is something innate in biology, geology, and society. It breaks any human attempts at rigid categorization. Metamorphosis is a process that reflects the inner life of being human.

Twelve per cent of the earth’s surface is made from metamorphic rocks. Marble and slate and volcanic stone, for example, are all metamorphic. They occur when profound physical or chemical changes are made at high temperatures and pressures in rocks, which recrystallize into new textures or compositions. It is interesting to note that the start of Ovid’s iconic epic poem Metamorphoses begins with “The Creation of The World”. In both poetry and science, the first metamorphosis was the planet itself.

There are fossil records for insect metamorphosis that date back over 300 million years. Metamorphic shifts in organisms develop over time, often triggered by environmental changes. A lake drying up or a change of season. Amphibians, insects, crustaceans, and molluscs transition in form—moving from egg to larva to pupa to adult. In all these stages, an organism can have completely different physiology, biochemistry, and behaviours. Evolution is intertwined with ideas around transmutation. The physical process of metamorphosis, however, is something human beings and mammals cannot undergo in their a lifetime (…)

SIIIX Vol. 3’s second single Anvil by Slikback is out now on all platforms

Kenyan producer @slikback channels his visceral sonic language into Anvil, threading @hiiit_music’s organic percussion recordings through a densely layered lattice of saturated percussion, metallic abrasion and ruptured low-end. Acoustic strikes are continually reshaped into unstable rhythmic matter, dissolving the boundaries between organic source material and synthetic deformation. Oscillating between tightly wound propulsion and moments of ferrite-laced release, Anvil unfolds through shifting spatial densities and hyper-compressed textures.

HIIIT - SIIIX, Vol. 3 ft. Lemna, Konduku, Toumba, Slikback, 33MYBW, Jung An Tagen - MLC025 - Out 29/07

Maloca presents SIIIX, Vol.3, the latest chapter in The Hague-based ensemble HIIIT’s ongoing collaborative series. Curated by @hiiit_music’s member Frank Wienk (Binkbeats), the project pairs the collective’s expansive archive of percussion recordings with a carefully selected group of artists operating across the experimental electronic spectrum. For this third edition, @toumba__ , @konduku, @slikback, @33emybw, Jung An Tagen and @lemnamusic each engage in a two-way exchange, incorporating newly recorded, track-specific percussion into their compositional processes.

For the first single, Lemna crafts an invocation-inducing workout on Waltz of The Fossils. Gradually unfolding into rolling percussion and dubbed-out ambient bell tones, the Japanese-native producer conjures into being a fluid rhythmic ecology populated with flecks of organic detail and laden with hypnotic rhythm.
