Season Three

I first came to season three for a market day. Local sellers and makers of artisanal works that spanned clothing to paintings and sculptures to poetry and linocuts and posters. I asked Nick about community or something or had some sort of rant about the council, to which he very patiently listened and then told me about his own frustrations in a very polite and far more eloquent way. I knew then that season three had something and someone special who just cared about a bigger picture.
Since then, I have shot countless shows with countless different acts and talent and every single time Nick made time to listen to whatever hot air I had to say. As cliché as it sounds, I am going to cherish every season three gig and event as it shows with the right people no matter the scale greatness can be achieved and shared amongst the community. I don’t think it’s a reach to say the team at Season Three particularly @nick.smethurst , @j.e._walker (if I’m getting any of that wrong or missing anyone don’t hate) are pillars of the community for what they have achieved and for always being so personable and lovely to everyone. It’s not easy fostering anything that goes against the grain in Brisbane but I’m glad I could contribute to this safe and loving community.
I look forward to the next chapter of their story.

Phenomenal performances from some of my favourite bands right now - that span the east coast.

This format is super haram for me (DSLR lord forbid) so I tweaked around with the pics a lot - all these bands will be getting an individual post in the future and as always I will make a link to all the Season Three shows and post in bio soon. I will post the 35mm b&w pics sometime soon in the future, just wanted to get this out while it's relevant as a send off.

Second to last night at the current incarnation of @seasonthreespace , featuring @quietstepsband @dorisbestfriends4ever @propaine (not pictured, I was too far back and none of my photos turned out remotely OK - but they sounded awesome!) and @valveposting

I think this deserves a spot on the timeline. I did not see “operating a community venue” as something I’d be doing, at this point in my existence - but, life is full of surprises, and the @seasonthreespace project has genuinely been the honour of a lifetime. The people I’ve met, the amazing music I’ve got to witness… I can’t say enough about what it’s all meant to me, and I’m so grateful that it’s meant anything to anyone else as well.

The current phase at 1/200 ends this weekend, with three final shows I’ve curated. Playing on Sunday, too. I hope anyone in Meanjin can join us, and I’ll try (and fail) to keep the subsequent outpouring of sentiment to a minimum. If anyone’s still reading, thanks to the community for having let me do this, and thank you @j.e._walker especially. ❤️

Okay, final week, only three shows remain. Happy to say that Naaki Soul will be joining Saturday’s show - here’s some words I wrote about that:

“There was a joke that Naaki Soul were the “house band” at S3 for a minute, and Anika showed me up for that by not playing here for the last little while. What a truly incredible songwriter, band, part of the community. Thanks for coming back to say goodbye with us.“

A few tickets remain for all shows. We will not turn folks away for lack of funds, so please, support where you can - but come celebrate regardless. See you Friday for Convulsing.

In one month, we will hold our final shows, before closing forever. Thank you to everyone who has allowed Season Three to mean something to them, over the past eighteen months. These last shows are a considered attempt to go out at the very apex of our ambition, and to create memories we hope will endure long after our little space becomes… offices, probably.

Here’s the final poster for all three shows, with thanks again to @velvetpaint, who did such an amazing job designing this set of four. Words about each of the three shows are in the individual posts, ticket links are in our bio, we love you.

These last shows are a considered attempt to go out at the very apex of our ambition, and to create memories we hope will endure long after our little space becomes… offices, probably. Here’s some words:

Night Two - Saturday, May 10th:

“Surprises” isn’t a band, FYI. Not every plot is fully formed yet, but space is being held for a few things that’d be nice to see eventuate. We had a very special local band ready to announce here too, but because of Music Business Reasons™️, there is now a black rectangle on the poster. We look forward to being allowed to remove the rectangle shortly.

Doris shows are powerful, visceral, cathartic experiences - their acoustic set here just last week was deeply moving, but having them back in full force carries a different weight. Propaine have been on the “wow, that’d be so special if…” list since we started booking bands here, and just when it looked impossible, the stars aligned to make this happen. Thank you for making the trip, friends.

Quiet Steps were an integral part of the first Meanjin community I ever felt connected to, a couple of lifetimes ago. It’s been amazing to watch their mythos grow, years after those formative house shows and crammed band rooms. They did some reunion shows in 2018, but the very idea of having them re-re-unite for this one felt significant.

Poster by @velvetpaint - tickets from the link in our bio.
