Highclere Castle, Highclere Park, England, United Kingdom

Highclere Castle is the seat of the Earls of Carnarvon.
In 749, the estate was granted to the Bishops of Winchester and a medieval palace was built by Bishop William of Wykeham.
In 1679, it was rebuilt by Sir Robert Sawyer, the ancestor of the Earl of Carnarvon.
In 1842, it was turned into the present castle by Sir Charles Barry, the architect who designed the Houses of Parliament in London.
It is a Grade I listed building and was chosen as the filming location for the famous Downton Abbey.

In 1922, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. In the castle there is also an Egyptian Exhibition.

In advance, I apologize for the quality , we have a tiny 32" TV in our room. There's a perfect space for a TV and that's all that will fit there… so here I am standing up taking pictures of my screen… 🙏🏼😂🇬🇧 but I do not apologize for the enthusiasm!! 🫶🏼🇬🇧 In the USA , tonight on #NBC They did a beautiful tribute to @downtonabbey_official and the new @downtonabbeyfilms 🇬🇧🫶🏼❤️. I had just thoroughly cleaned our room yesterday & It is sparkling clean, ✨and has freshly washed curtains, freshly wash sheets, floors are scrubbed, baseboards are scrubbed. Everything is so clean. Then , I worked hard today outside in the garden all day , and got a good shower and put on my favorite PJs & dressing gown from @highclere_castle 💜 Poured myself some of my favorite bourbon., 🥃 and watched this show with more happiness and peace, than I thought possible. ✨🍃 THANK YOU to every cast member that played the character that we loved, to every writer and producer, to #julianfellowes , and to anyone else involved… Thank you for the memories for the joy that you brought to us. 🇬🇧❤️ This program just showed the joy and love and Family feeling that this cast has. It was so nice to see.!! I don't know if any of you will see this post ever… But please know the joy that you've brought to our lives, it is lasting joy.. because crazy people like me watch Downton Abbey on repeat, I must've watched the series at least 25 times. It's my comfort show. I watch it every evening. And never get tired of it. In a world that could be so hard and complicated , Thank you for giving us this beautiful storyline. 🙏🏼❤️ So many of us have difficulties in our lives and we can escape to #Downton for as long as we want. Because now we have six series, three movies, and even this beautiful tribute hour to watch. Highclere Castle “A Weekend to Remember” 🧡

What can we say. It’s almost difficult to put into words how wonderful, emotional and energetic this incredible event has been at Highclere.

Lord and Lady Carnarvon and every team member at Highclere have pushed far beyond what you could imagine to organise this all consuming event, at one of the world’s most iconic private home locations.

A Weekend to Remember is two days dedicated to the memory of those that have served and continue to serve for the protection of nations and to bring peace and unity. A 1940s celebration of community spirit, fun and remembrance for ALL nations and those that were lost in the grounds of Highclere.

The message delivered by Lord and Lady Carnarvon and their esteemed guests, including the daughter of Dame Vera Lynn, was touching and moving. The flight of the World War Two aircraft as the piper played was spine tingling and incredibly emotional. The applause of the crowd in the beautiful grounds was electric.

For the thousands of visitors, from all around the world, there was a lovely sense of togetherness, lighthearted chatter and many many smiles. There is so much to see and do and many treats to be had.

We cannot end this post without mentioning the incredible display in honour of Dame Maggie Smith, The Dowager Countess. The flowers in this art were exquisite and it was a privilege to experience it.

Finally, our heartfelt thanks goes to Lord and Lady Carnarvon. To John, to Luis, to Paul, to Jason, to Tom, to Anne, to Caitlin and to all of the team for making us so very welcome and for creating something so special. When you leave Highclere you will miss it, but you’ll will miss the people more 🧡

What a dream it was to be at @highclere_castle yesterday. Such a beautiful place full of colour, history and most of all familiar Downton Abbey spots.
Ran into @r2taggy which was a great surprise. Have been following his Instagram for a few years now seeing some beautiful outside shots of Highclere from his perspective.
