how to shoot a video part 2: after an aborted attempt to film in a beautiful bespoke orange kitchen designed by day one family friend @jossdude at an arts collective project in Sheffield (#tip1: don’t give up) chef @chevoneesse had the hook up with a salubrious restaurant in central LDN. once secured (free of charge - #tip2: call in favours where possible), I scoped out which spots in the building would be most conducive to being captured on camera. I subsequently storyboarded the whole shoot; cast the actors in their respective roles and ordered a plethora of props including CAKE! the night before the shoot, I had a late studio session with @jsasmuzik, @vvnsings & Tylah David for another album project; #tip3: don’t be like me; get an EARLY NIGHT before filming! after running a multitude of errands on the Saturday morning, I dashed to set where @migrationfilms had already set up. #tip4 always overestimate the ammount of time it takes to ready cameras and lights! first up: my performances in the orange outfit to augment my auburn ambience & a legacy of the mooted Sheffield shoot too! #tip5: on a tight schedule, limit the ammount of takes to 3 per scene. next up: the kitchen scenes - the shot where @98jayda snatched the plate off my extended arm was completely spontaneous - plus the archetypal rap staircase scene which was super cramped! #tip6: always invite actors to arrive on set earlier than they are to be filmed! with performance shots complete, we switched to narrative scenes: the “cuddly drillers” & the “uninvited guests” with @ionwisdom doubling as doorman & driller when our original bouncer had to bounce due to a family emergency #tip7: improvise where necessary! we finished with the feast at the table (my ascent from the kitchen a back-to-front homage to the legendary #Goodfellas extended steady cam shot) & it was a WRAP! cast & crew celebrated with vegetarian cuisine kindly cooked by the huge-hearted @kaligld_ & @farahvisualarts. I was so exhausted from the Herculean effort I lay supine on the seat unable to say a word but still pulled myself up to put in a shift tidying the restaurant #tip8: respect, manners & courtesy go far! “Nadiya Hussain” out now!

so you’ve seen my new video “Nadiya Hussain” featuring the vocals of @aichatherese, produced by @thecatburglarmusic and filmed by @migrationfilms, right? I wanted to share the incredible work that went into it. before music, poetry, a PhD, lyrics and literature, I have a background in fine art, filmmaking, photography and graphic design. I’m especially passionate about the synthesis of sound and image in storytelling and translate my myriad influences into my craft. hopefully this reel communicates just some of the efforts required to put a video like this together! I’ll be sharing some more of the crazy stories surrounding the shoot alongside exclusive behind the scenes photos in the coming days so stay locked! “Nadiya Hussain” is out now on my YouTube channel: Tommy Evans Official. please drop a comment below or DM if you’d like more tips/life hacks/behind the scenes stories in this journey of an independent artist! (PS that’s my book being read by a “cuddly driller!”) . . . . . #ukrap #ukrapper #alternativerap #hiphopsoul #conscioushiphop #ukhh #ukhiphop #nadiyahussain #cake
