Combining April and May because… ADHD. 🫣

Lately, I’ve been trying to find the words for how I feel about social media.

I used to say, “I was an influencer before influencers were a thing,” but the truth is, I’ve never fully connected to what social media has become. I’m an in-person spirit. I prefer face-to-face connection, real conversation, real energy.

The internet before the 2010s felt different. It was about connecting with people you already knew. Post-2020, it feels like platforms are designed to harvest our attention, time, and energy for people we’ve never even met. Overconsumption has changed how we think, interact, create, and move through life. @alexwolf speaks beautifully about this, and hearing someone finally articulate it made me feel less alone.

What’s wild is… while trying to navigate all of this, I somehow became an educator.

A lot of people don’t know this, but I was introduced to filmmaking in the 5th grade through DreamYard. A teaching artist named Tanya Steele came into my classroom and taught us writing, photography, storyboarding, acting, filmmaking — all of it. I played the lead in a short film called The First Day of School, and seeing myself on a theater screen at Lehman College in front of a full audience changed my life.

It was one of the first times I truly felt seen.

Growing up in the Bronx, raised by foster parents who didn’t have the resources or guidance to help me pursue this path, I realized how many kids in our communities never get exposed to what’s possible outside of the environments they know.

So going back home to teach filmmaking honestly feels bigger than me.

I’ve worked in this industry for years, and while I’m still building toward the life and career I envision for myself as an actor, writer, director, and producer (follow @limitlessmediapllc 🫶🏽), there’s something incredibly meaningful about returning to the Bronx to pour into the next generation.

And my first school?
A middle school four blocks away from my high school… led by my former 3rd grade teacher. I was his first student.

That kind of full-circle moment doesn’t feel accidental to me. (Continued in comments)

Exactly 365 days ago I lost one of my best friends.

I didn’t feel like celebrating into the New Year after saying goodbye to Bee. I didn’t realise back then, sitting on the cold wet soil with her body, kissing her soft nose one last time, that this would be the beginning of yet another journey, led by Bee.

2023 has been a pivotal year for me. A year of many changes, losses and finding back HOME to myself. I don’t think I ever felt this much at home with who I am and where I am going, with speaking my truth and sharing it with the world.

I lived. I lost. I cried. I loved. I healed. I laughed. I grew. I dreamed. I celebrated. All that and everything inbetween.

I am so grateful to each and every one of you for being part of this community and/or the Inner Circle. My work means the world to me and I know it will do great things for the welfare of animals, now and in the future.

This year I’ve been supported by so many amazing people near and far in numerous ways, including this community, for which I want to say thank you! Whether you are tagged or not, know that you made a difference. 🥹

That’s a wrap on #NewAmsterdam. If I wrote down everything I’m grateful for, everyone I’m indebted to, I’d hit IG’s character limit before I got halfway. But fuck! I want to! I want to gush and ooze and burst and spill because I’m so fucking thankful and I owe so much to so many. The people who made this show, the people who watched this show, the people who had nothing to do with the show except they are my friends and held my hand as I reeled from the rollercoaster of It All (what do the kids say? screaming crying throwing up?)

How do you express such fullness? Such awe? This job has changed me, atomically and forever. Making this show has been one of the great joys of my life and I will miss it terribly. I’m so proud to have helped tell stories that matter. That are a comfort in the chaos. Thank you for welcoming me to the #damfam. Thank you for watching.
