🕯️ Repro Shabbat is a Jewish response to a moral crisis.

In “Repro Shabbat: A Jewish Commitment to Reproductive Freedom and Justice,” published by Spirituality & Judaism Network, Rabbi Eric Leiderman turns to Jewish law, ethics, and lived experience to address what this moment demands of us as Jews.

At a time when reproductive healthcare is being restricted in the name of “religion,” this essay reminds us of a core Jewish truth: Judaism does not treat pregnancy as an abstraction or ideology. It centers the life, health, and dignity of the person who is pregnant. Torah, Talmud, and generations of rabbinic interpretation are clear on this point.

Repro Shabbat—observed this year during Parashat Mishpatim—calls Jewish communities to study what our tradition actually teaches, not what others project onto it. It asks us to take seriously the Jewish commitment to medical ethics, religious freedom, and moral responsibility. And it insists that silence, in this moment, is not neutral.

This essay weaves text and tradition with science, family, and memory to make a case that feels both ancient and urgent:
🕯️ reproductive freedom is a Jewish value
🕯️ access to care is a matter of pikuach nefesh
🕯️ protecting autonomy is part of protecting life

Repro Shabbat is not symbolic. It is instructive. It is communal. And it is a call to action.

Happy Birthday / יום הולדת שמח to our wonderful and amazing Israel Fellow, Shaked!! 🥳💗🎂

We love you so much and are so sad that this is your last year at Hillel Milwaukee, but thank you for all of the great memories we’ve gotten to share with you! (Some of these pics are pre-COVID 🙂)

One student shared, “my favorite memories with Shaked are all of the fun times we had in the kitchen at Hillel. I love and miss cooking with her ❤️”

Another student shared “I really liked during the Israel Learning Fellowship when she would ask us all to come up with a quirky name based on the criteria for the day.”

Thank you for all of the delicious baked goods and the innovation you’ve shared with the entire Hillel Milwaukee community! We love you ❤️❤️❤️
