SUMMER MOVED ON. Impressions from Newfoundland July-Sept. '26. The sky above the woodfired hot tub at the edge of the forest is full of seagulls, their wings translucent in the sun. They look like a shoal of fish, birch tops gently swaying with the wind like seaweed. I walk to the edge of the cliff on East Coast Trail, waves crashing on the boulders so you can feel the salty spray on your skin. Nothing soothes me quite as much as watching the ocean rage.

People here have learned how to live with the tumultuous nature, the lingering winters, the lives lost. The omnipresent key of melancholy, overpowered by resilience and Irish joy. Sea shanties evening at Erin’s Pub. Folk night at Linda’s. Bobbie’s ghost sensing device is bleeping red like crazy as Fred, long-haired bearded local looking like he walked in straight from Widow’s Bay sips on his tiny glass of port under the lifebuoys of lost ships and seal hunting clubs. There’s a guy from Maine doing research on moose and a pilot on a layover plotting a church window heist with me over double shots of Powers. “We don’t have many murders in Newfoundland, but we do have many missing people,” tells me a local sci-fi writer with a wink as he leans against a bar. Makes me want to disappear my enemies.

I spend hours on trails here, but it’s the people that truly make this place feel like home. We gather at the farm, cracking snow crab legs, deshelling Labrador ice shrimp & roasting chicken. Mauzy’s wild apple cider on tap, the back of Matt’s mini truck repurposed as a music stage. The singing Newfoundland accent, locked in the island’s time capsule. I walk down to Quidi Vidi, a whiff of whisky & sweat coming from one house, walk past Caleb, cursing as he cleans the last lobsters of the season, cod drying at the back of Skipper’s ring shack, the old fish stages one harsh winter away from crumbling to the Atlantic, the cod carcasses in the shallow sea grave, the submersible from Netflix’ Below displayed in front of the brewery, Ed walking his massive Newfoundlander Sable around the wharf, luring in female tourists like a furry honeypot. There’s nowhere I want to spend my summers more.

We know it’s easier to go online or call a national supplier and order exactly what you need. Working with a local farm takes a little more patience and flexibility—waiting week to week to see what’s ready, adjusting menus and sharing in the uncertainty of Newfoundland weather.

Growing here keeps us guessing. Having restaurants willing to work with what our fields provide makes all the difference.

So, we wanted to say thank you—and have a little fun along the way!

Our first annual Golden Spud Award goes to Blue on Water, the restaurant that purchased the most vegetables, herbs, micros and flower from All Saints Farm in 2026. 🏆

A big thank-you to our runner-up, Portage (maybe a silver spud next year), and to Magnum & Steins, Rabble and Mallard Cottage for supporting our farm.

Every order counts. Behind each one is a chef choosing local, a kitchen making it work and a farmer grateful for the support. 💛

Still growing Albion parsnip, leek, beet, tomatoes, peas - so not done yet but we thought it timely with Thanksgiving weekend to say thanks now.

Turns out the cure for my running rut wasn’t… more running 🫪

Sometimes I need to stop trying to force myself out of it and just go live my life for a bit. Walk the dogs. Go to the gym. Go to dinner. See my friends. Rest. Show up for run club just for the people.

Running will still be there when I actually miss it again. 🫶🏼

Anyone else been feeling a little ✨meh✨ about running lately?

If there’s one thing St. John’s surprised us with, it was the food. From elevated Newfoundland cuisine to food trucks and cozy cafés, these were some of our favourite stops:

📍 Rabble — A trendy, cozy spot on Water Street serving creative, seasonal dishes with plenty of local seafood and Mediterranean and European influences. Great cocktails, beautiful plates and an upscale feel without being overly formal. @rabble_yyt

📍 Maya Bakery + Coffee — A cute little bakery and café on Duckworth Street that’s perfect for a morning matcha or coffee and an afternoon treat. Think freshly baked pastries, specialty coffees, matcha drinks, sandwiches and seriously tempting desserts. They also seal their to go cups like a can. @mayabakerynl

📍 Johnny & Mae’s Food Truck — Come hungry! This local food truck is known for massive burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, loaded poutines, homemade fries and creative specials. They also operate a seafood-focused truck with Newfoundland favourites like lobster rolls and fish & chips. @johnnyandmaes

📍 Quidi Vidi Brewery — More than just a brewery, this is a quintessential Newfoundland experience. Located right on the water in picturesque Quidi Vidi Village, it’s the perfect place to grab a local craft beer, enjoy some pub food and take in one of the prettiest views around St. John’s. Their famous Iceberg Beer is made using iceberg water. @quidividibrewery

📍 The Merchant Tavern — One of St. John’s signature downtown dining spots, combining an upscale atmosphere with a relaxed tavern feel. The menu highlights local ingredients, fresh seafood and a raw-bar influence, alongside great cocktails and wine. A perfect choice for a nicer dinner while still experiencing Newfoundland flavours. @themerchanttavernnl

📍 Annie’s Wine Bar is a cozy, stylish spot in downtown St. John’s with a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. Known for its thoughtfully curated wine selection, it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for slowing down over a great glass of wine and sharing a few small plates. It has a warm, effortlessly cool vibe that makes it a great stop for a date night or drinks with friends. @annieswinebar

Fresh seafood is one of the reasons so many people come to Newfoundland.

Whether you're exploring Gros Morne, spending the afternoon in Quidi Vidi, wandering downtown St. John's, or taking the scenic drive along the Southern Shore, these are the seafood stops we'd happily plan the trip around.

If you could only choose one, which stop would you make the drive for?
