Some details from the exhibition install of Tannic Bonds, co-curated with @omwelch, at @wangarattaartgallery. We began conceptualising this show back in 2022 and it is so rewarding to see it come together. Tannic Bonds was born out of conversations about the physical and metaphorical weight of tannins, those natural compounds found in trees and plant matter. It features work by 8 artists: @moorinabonini @d_gnidrah @kirtika.kain @cameronrobbinsart @monicaranirudhar @arti_shivanjani @jayanto_art @abdullahmisyed

This project was supported by grant funding from @creative.australia @regionalartsvic

Affording Truth @wangarattaartgallery opening this afternoon + conversation with artists Lauren Dunn, Tyza Hart, Raquel Ormella and Scotty So, followed by the official launch of the exhibition featuring a special performance by artist Scotty So. This is ‘Image Body Image (Tech mediate)’ one of 3 new print and sculptural works I was commissioned to make for travelling group exhibition ‘Affording Truth’.

Curated by Rachel Arndt @rachelearndt, @hanny.wills and Lee-Anne Hall the exhibition features work by 14 artists exploring how we perceive and navigate truth in a time of global uncertainty, using the framework of affordances, the qualities of objects or environments that suggest or enable particular actions and interactions. Perceived, false or hidden, affordances are everywhere and key to how humans navigate the world.

Affording Truth is a collaboration with Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in NSW and City of Moreton Bay Galleries in QLD and will open at Wangaratta Art Gallery on Saturday 28 March before touring to Wagga Wagga in NSW and Redcliffe in QLD later in the year.

Britt Salt and my show at Wangaratta Art Gallery ‘Counterparts: Expanded Textile Practices’ finishes next weekend.

I am presenting the 3rd version of my project Fantasies (2018-ongoing) a growing collection of sculptures/installations created from secondhand nighties. Happily, one of my first works to enter a public collection was ‘Dissolved nightie in lilac’ (from the original Fantasies show), so it was a full circle moment to include that work here, alongside 3 new Dissolved panels.

@brittsalt has installed a site-specific iteration of her project Living Grid, which responds to the unique architecture of the gallery, a 19th century church. This work comprises new tapestries, sculptural objects, and spatial drawings.

Thank you to everybody who has visited and to @wangarattaartgallery for all their support, including supporting the creation of new work for both Britt and I.

This is my fourth time exhibiting at Wangaratta and I am a huge fan of, and grateful for the work the gallery does sharing contemporary art and specifically work in the field of textiles!

New Exhibition On Display | Saturday 17 August

The Good is a major new solo exhibition by artist Anna Louise Richardson whose practice is centred around rural life, embedded in the experience and drama of everyday reality. Working primarily in charcoal and graphite, Richardson’s work explores ideas of intergenerational exchange, parenthood and identity based on her experiences of living and working on a multi-generational beef cattle farm in rural Australia.

Curated by Rachel Arndt & Dr Lee-Anne Hall. A Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, The Condensery and Museums and Galleries of NSW touring exhibition. This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia and the Government of Western Australia through the Department, Culture and the Arts (WA). This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal art investment and advisory body.

How to draw ✍️ 🌻

Cape weed, 2023, charcoal on cement fibreboard, 182x115cm

In spring the farm turns yellow, especially round the houses and firebreaks where daisies or Capeweed flourish on the bare ground. A noxious weed that aggressively spreads, it is also beautiful, providing golden paddock backdrops in photos of the kids, and the daisy chains we love to make and wear.
Synonymous with many areas of countryside, in springtime these seasonal weeds polarise farming communities. They sometimes devastate crop yields, but also have a place as most weeds do, in covering bare ground and providing dry fodder for grazing animals. The health risk Capeweed poses when the only feed available, must be controlled with grazing management in a healthy pasture ecosystem.

Also available as a tattoo for your house via Anna’s Animal Stickers (link in bio)

Friend’s exhibition, Intimate Immensity’ includes many recent works by the artist, such as this work from Friend’s ‘Rose Lake’ series.

Writing about the series, Rachel Arndt says, “Friend uses carmine—a brilliant scarlet derived from the dried and ground cochineal beetle. The insect has been used to colour food, textiles, and cosmetics for centuries. This series introduced this vibrant scarlet, and a new colour scheme, into Friend’s otherwise sophisticated yet pared-back palette of blues, greys, and earth tones. ‘The Rose Lake (after Sir Michae Tippett)’ (2021) is an homage to the late composer, lauded for his originality and risk. Similarly, Friend’s colour choice lends an edge of disorder to his oeuvre, the novelty of colour a challenge to his familiar audience.

Brilliant orbs of carmine float like red blood cells under a microscope. Returning to the biological nature of Friends chose materials. In its essentiality, the work harks to bodily experience—the union of gametes required at conception or cell necrosis during illness or injury—as life and death conjoined. The necessity of risk and chance in the complex biological process play out over the paper and through the artist’s meticulous technique.”

Now showing in ‘Intimate Immensity: Ian Friend’ until 12 August. This exhibition is a partnership with The Condensery and Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Galleries.

Opportunity of a lifetime: I’m so thrilled M&G NSW has received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts for a national regional tour of ‘The Good’ through its Contemporary Touring Initiative.

Working primarily in charcoal and graphite, my practice explores ideas of intergenerational exchange, parenthood and identity based on my experiences of living and working on a multi-generation beef cattle farm in rural Australia.

‘The Good’ will tour to 10 venues across 4 states, starting with The Condensery in Toogoolawah next month!

Grainy photos of panel talks and presentations at conferences don't make for especially compelling Instagram content but it's been a fascinating few days on Awabakal and Worimi lands reflecting on the state of the museum and gallery sector and the conversations we're having, avoiding, missing, trying to have, and frankly not having often enough.

In a week of deep introspection, there were a few ⚡⚡moments of real provocation, honest reflection, invitation and insight that I'm especially grateful for (not all of them captured here in all their grainy glory...)

That I also got the chance to talk with the exceptionally generous and brilliant @nurshkembi @jade.irvine and Julia Mendel from the @nationalgalleryaus - about last year's Digital Young Writers Mentorship and what it means for institutions to support critical young voices - well my gratitude knows no bounds 🙌❤️

Pretty tired now though, not going to lie.
