New episode with Rachel Haack drops tomorrow!

The parent-child relationship is a formative attachment bond. When the parent abandons the child, even in adulthood, it can cause what Rachel Haack refers to as "betrayal trauma".

Here are some of the things that I've learned in the past year. As a therapist launching a private practice and growing on social media, I hope you find it helpful.

If you want the full guide I'm sending out tomorrow in my newsletter process notes, comment "newsletter" below. I'll add you to the list to get emails from me about being a therapist every Tuesday morning.

This morning, while doing a journal reflection from the "Something Worth Saying" challenge with @therapy.with.blake (shutout to all my #swschallenge homiez!), I was reminded of a quote that @rachelhaack said to me a little while ago.

"Don't judge your planting season against somebody else's harvest."

And I realized that not only had I been judging myself while I'm in a planting season according to the harvest season of others that it's so easy to see sprawled out on social media, but also I hadn't been allowing myself to be present to the season that I'm in. Understanding that this season is asking something different of me. It means that I have different responsibilities, different priorities, and also different privileges in this season.

This season is a huge growing season, as my wife and I are building and launching our therapy practice at @koumwellness I mean, look at that social media page. It literally doesn't even have a profile picture.

We're right in the thick of it, learning how to build a business, bring on employees, care for those employees, and complete policies and procedures.
What I realized in the practice that Blake guided us in was that I've been putting an unfair pressure on my creativity to perform in a season where it doesn't actually have the nutrients and the resources to grow. That's really okay, because for my creativity, this is kind of like the winter. It's in a bit of hibernation, and this gave me the confidence to realize that I don't have to be afraid of losing my creativity. And instead of trying to pull it out of a season that it's in, and forcing performance, I can let it hibernate while I focus on the responsibilities at hand.

The spring always follows the winter, and if I’ve learned anything from living in Ohio, it’s that the winter months, though cold and bitter sometimes, can be a really important time of interior growth: reflection and personal exploration.

This is a season for me when I don’t necessarily have that same access to creativity and openness and spontaneity, but I’m planting the seed for an organization, a company, a culture that can help other plants grow under.

Have you ever felt that family repair after estrangement feels impossible? You’re not alone.

Family estrangement is a struggle many parents face, leaving them questioning their past and wondering if healing is possible. It’s crucial to recognize that these rifts often stem from complex, layered dynamics in which two different stories play out.

Understanding starts with humility and curiosity. Instead of defensiveness, approach these conversations with an open heart. Can you listen to your child’s perspective without feeling the need to defend yourself?

Remember, it’s okay to acknowledge the pain. You can’t control their choices, but you can choose to be a safe space for connection.

I’m joined by family conflict expert Rachel Haack @rachelhaack, who does amazing work bringing families back together.

To listen to the Midlife Momma podcast, Episode 226. When Families Become Estranged and How Healing Begins with Family Therapist, Rachel Haack, comment “PODCAST” and I’ll send it via DMs.

What’s your take on this? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
