#latepost Two weeks ago I completed my 32nd year of teaching; and while it was a rough one, this @browningbison graduating class of 2025 and I made some really great memories together! So many fun volunteer events produced by @ombrello.agency @paulvitagliano and @thebillyharris ; LA Chef Con working with @metzger_brad and his group @bmrsfoodjobs ; at the @adventurestodreams garden for @sheila.grantham.94 ; breaking the @guinnessworldrecords of the largest nachos EVER at @smorgasburgla for @beavisandbutthead ; serving delicious platters of locally grown and cooked dishes at the Annual LB Farm to Table dinner at the @organicharvestgrdns hosted by @primalalchemy ; working the @buzzfeedtasty stage @complexcon for @joemollerevents ; slingin’ slices at @pizzacityfest @laliveofficial for @carylchinn ; passing out holiday tchotchkes at the annual tree lighting for @visitlb ….and so more!!! I am so proud of this group of graduates and look forward to watching where their paths take them next! Remember: be big, be bold, be brave, BE BISON; do your Bison best, and GOOOOO BISON! 🦬 Ya heard!

Day 2: COOK AROUND THE WORLD COMPETITION Sunday, 10 @browningbison student chefs, one sibling, 2 guardians and myself converged at @epcot_waltdisneyworld along with over 200 other culinary students to cook in the third heat of this year’s @cookatwdw competition hosted by @worldstrides and held Epcot. For this competition, one student is chosen as the captain who will then pick an envelope which will indicate which continent their cuisine must represent. They are then led to a table where a secret basket of required ingredients will be opened by all of the students at one time. They then have 90 minutes to create an appetizer and a composed entree before being judged by Executive Chefs and Chef Instructors in the industry. And walking around the expo, was @jettila at the ready to mentor and assist the students if needed. Well, Aud was our team captain and the card pulled was AFRICA!! Fortunately, @chefamandasbusy had just recently visited our class and demonstrated Ethiopian Shrimp & Okra stew….when they got to their station and discovered their ingredients, they collaborated and determined they would do a grilled corn skewer appetizer and a spicy African chicken and okra stew over couscous. The clock began to countdown and the quickly scrambled chopping, cutting, slicing, sauteeing, grilling and moving; one of our Bison, Kaitlyn, even got a little one on one lesson with Chef Jet of how to debone chicken! Before they knew it- the 90 minutes was just about up; they plated and completed in time and had the rest of the afternoon to park hop before we attended the awards gala dinner later that evening where Chef Jet gave out great advice to the over 800 culinary students in training. And while our team didn’t come home with an award, we are definitely winners as we set out to complete the mission, plate the completed dish and get it in front of the judges, which they most certainly did! GO 🦬!!!

Day 1- So last Friday, I hopped aboard @southwestair @lgbairport with 10 children, 2 parents/guardians, and a sibling in tow and headed down to @waltdisneyworld for our first ever @cookatwdw competition! But before we competed, Disney treated us to a “Leadership The Disney Way” workshop where my students and another school worked together to solve various critical thinking problems. Maddie was designated the Vice President of “the company” and charged with breaking the students up into 4 groups while assuring to uphold the company values of safety & inclusion. My girl Maddie was slick, she intentionally mixed all the kids up forcing them to interact, which ultimately worked in their favor, as when they got to the competition the next day, they were excited to see their new friends! ….stay tuned for Day 2: Competition Day! . . . . . #fieldtrip #cookaroundtheworld #disneyworld #epcot #leadershipthedisneyway #thedisneyway #culinaryarts #florida #chef #cheflife #chefinstructor #ccapiscooking

In my 30 years of teaching at 6 different schools, this is the first time ever where Teacher Appreciation exceeded anything I could have ever dreamed of, and all because of one special parent @rachelleog who organized all of this with an assist from our amazing Advisory Board President, Jeff Forney of @lbconventionctr Together they reached out to business members of our Long Beach community to see how they might contribute to celebrating and uplifting of the teaching staff at @browningbison and boy did they come thru!!! Each teacher received over $400 in gift cards- each receiving one gift card of choice of just over $100 and one $50ish and then a whole bunch of others!!! And if that wasn’t enough- some AMAZING restaurants fed us breakfast AND lunch each day - I’m looking at you @littlecoyotelbc @simplysalad @bigepizza @dirtdogla @thekroft @einsteinbros @sweetretreatdonuts @greatmexgrill.longbeach and I’m sure I am forgetting someone- but THANK YOU ALL ON BEHALF OF ALL THE TEACHING STAFF AT BROWNING HIGH! We appreciate YOU! #proudtobelbusd #blessed
