Seven years ago I woke up on a random Tuesday and decided I didn’t want to spend the majority of my life in a career I didn’t love. So I started over and it has become one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made.

I really thought I wanted to be an oncology nurse, but as we know, life had different plans. I found my home in labor and delivery- advocating/caring/ and loving on women and their babies. And as beautiful as it’s been, nothing was more beautiful than being able to care for Brandon. Advocating for him, making sure he always had a voice, and walking alongside him during the last six years will forever be the greatest honor of my life.

Nurses week feels different this year- more sentimental. No one cheered me on more than Brandon. From the moment I decided I wanted to become a nurse, to graduation day, and even up until my last shift before he went into hospice, he was always there. Rooting for me. Bragging about my achievements at work. Always making it known how proud he was.

Nursing is so hard. The last five months have forever altered my perspective on this field. And while I think all nurses are brilliant and incredible, I mostly think we are brave. We show up for people at their most vulnerable. We are the steady hands when worlds are falling apart. We are the words of encouragement when our patient’s (or their families) don’t think they can go any further. Sometimes we sit in the silence of grief and sometimes we get to be a part of the most intimate and memorable moments of someone’s life.

To all my nurses out there- thank you for showing up. For caring even when it seems like you’re the only one that does. You do not hear it enough, but as someone who relied heavily on nurses for years, you are making such a major difference in the lives of others. šŸ¤ #NursesWeek
