White-throated Sparrow by @rachrosenstein 🍃

One of the continent's best-studied and most familiar songbirds, the White-throated Sparrow is found at some season throughout much of North America south of the tree line and principally east of the Rocky Mountains.

Redeye Rendezvous 2024. I’m so happy we finally got together and had some awesome fellowship! Thank you to my awesome chapter @nativefishcoalitionsc for all y’all do!

Earlier this month, some members of the NFC South Carolina chapter met up for our first ever Redeye Rendezvous! The day was spent chasing after Bartram’s Bass, among other native species, in some of the state’s most pristine waters.

As Bartram’s Bass face serious threats of hybridization with other black bass species, strongholds like these are increasingly rare. It is important that anglers and others in the community implement the most responsible practices when interacting with these environments.

Two weeks in under two minutes. Only the fun stuff!🚣‍♂️ 1. Teaching an ACA L2 Paddling Clinic with State Director William Holman on the Catawba in Morganton NC as part of an Ecotour with Catawba Riverkeeper
2. Documenting Stormwater Runoff at construction sites in Lincoln and Gaston County
3. Sampled scouting waterways in a new way. This kayak had a jet engine strapped to the back ✈️🚣‍♂️. Thank you Derek for taking me for a spin.
4. Joined our Riverkeeper team of scientists (@bj_jonez , @kcartt , @rachrosenstein) and @clemsonuniversity on Great Falls in South Carolina to monitor the progress of the Spider Lily Propagation Program. Joined by the best crew of tactical volunteers one could ask for! @jgwilb , Dennis Huntley, and @ridin_dirty_wheels
5. Teaching an Introduction to Kayaking and Water Safety Clinic at Lake Norman State Park. This program is a partnership between @ncstateparks , @acapaddlesports , Coast Guard Auxiliary, NC Fish and Wildlife, and many others, meant to educate the communities on how to safely enjoy their waterways. Thank you @n___greene , @stacey.fano , and @unintelligiblebay for all of your help! @catawbariverkeeper @hysideinflatables @acapaddlesports @gopro @djiglobal @daggerkayaks @motojetusa #protect #preserve #restore #education #paddlesports

I wanted to share a few clips from the past month or so on various creeks, rivers, and lakes throughout the Catawba and its neighboring Basins. It is such a privilege to explore our waterways with colleagues, guests, and members of @catawbariverkeeper and collectively work together to protect and restore the river we all love. May 4th kicks off our recreation season with kayak rentals at both @boathousecrf and @confluencesouthfork, our first Jam at the Dam🎸,and many other festivities throughout the month. We have an Ecotour, Spider Lilies Tours, Full Moon Paddles, an Introduction to Kayak Clinic, and Riverfest just to name a few. Visit www.catawbariverkeeper.org to join in the fun and be a part of the Riverkeeper Community. Per usual I have included the locations of the clips seen in the video below⬇️. -The Old Catawba: Below Lake James. We saw a beautiful juvenile bald eagle just below the put-in.
-The Catawba River: Above Lake James. Our first paddling Ecotour of the season. Starting from the first blueway access, we paddled to the mouth of Lake James.
-The North Toe River: Scouting a “new to me” section of water for a staff outing in June.
-Fishing Creek: Conducting a river survey looking at buffers, discharge pipes, and sedimentation from tributaries.
-South Fork at Spencer Mountain: Team training and water safety
-Sparkleberry Swamp, The Santee River, and Lake Marion: These were all part of the same extended paddle. We joined our friends at Sun City Kayak and Canoe Club and then continued on to paddle across Lake Marion. Checking off another section of my source to sea journey.
-South Fork at Hardin Dam: Just some exercise and attainments
-Rankin Lake: The first full moon paddle of the season.
-Survey Flight of the Northern Catawba Basin: The highlight of the flight for me was seeing the rapid “Huntleys Retreat” on Wilson Creek while sitting next to the man it was named after.
-Muddy Creek into the Bridgewater section of the Catawba: Our second paddling Ecotour of the series.
-Ice Cream Truck at the takeout: Deserved its own category. Should become a standard for all river access points. 😊🍦

Exploring an urban stream is a unique experience, but it’s not without its challenges. Trash, poor water quality, and limited access make it tough, but the beauty of the waterway keeps us coming back. I wanted to give a shoutout to @catawbariverkeeper ‘s Policy Manager @ryry325 for his tireless efforts in improving access and water quality in our urban creeks around Charlotte. Become a member and stay up to date on initiatives throughout the Basin!#trashfreewaters #protectnature #lovewaterways #restoreourrivers
