She’s arrived.

From this Saturday, Gwen John: Strange Beauties takes over the whole of Modern Two in the first major retrospective in Scotland dedicated to one of Britain’s most pioneering artists.

Marking 150 years since her birth, the exhibition brings together more than 200 paintings, rarely seen drawings and archival material, offering a fresh look at Gwen John’s quietly radical artistic vision.

Following acclaimed presentation at @museumwales , it’s now your chance to experience this extraordinary exhibition in Edinburgh.

In this film, Rachel Stratton from the @yalebritishart reflects on John’s extraordinary ability to capture both the strength and tenderness of her female sitters.

Slow down and spend time with Gwen’s intimate and meditative paintings, then make a day of it at Modern Two with a walk through the grounds, lunch in the café and a visit to the shop.

Gwen John: Strange Beauties is open daily at Modern Two from Saturday 1 August. Book your tickets via the link in our bio.

What a whirlwind. It has been a joy to finally open Gwen John: Strange Beauties and to have our book published yesterday with @yalebritishart @yalebooks after three years of work with my co-curator and co-editor @rachstratts and with contributions from @orin.zahra @rebeccafbirrell @gruetznerrobins @fimclees @helena.on.sea @lauren_elkin_ and Cecily Langdale

Had she been alive, I doubt Gwen John would have come to see it. Perhaps, however, she would have sent a letter, like this one, which she sent to the Museum in 1935 when we purchased the first of her ‘little paintings’.

In no particular order, here are some highlights, including wonderful reviews, speaking on BBC Radio 4 Front Row and Wales Art Show, and collaborating with the best. And there is more to come!

So many people made this exhibition possible, thank you all ✨

🇺🇳🧐🙌
4 weeks ago today we 12 fellows flew thousands of miles from Australia, New Zealand, Nepal, India, South Africa, Botswana, Mauritius and the US, gathered for the BAN curatorial forum. Specialising in diverse genres and across times, we attempted to re-examine the contemporary presentation of, or even the definition of 'British art’, especially through the lens of post-colonialism, decolonisation, indigenous rights, environmental justice, social inequality and more.

Mega thanks to @paulmelloncentr @bryonybotwrightrance @anthonybtino @sarahvictoriaturner and #MartinMyrone for orchestrating such a marvellous programme, but more importantly for crossing our paths together. In Chinese we say “海內存知己 天涯若比鄰" which means genuine kindred spirits transcend physical distance and can endure regardless of how far apart we may be —
Like @janedavidsonladd said: ‘I am humbled to be among such a group. And I can't wait to see what we will all do next!’
