Yesterday in Missoula, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard three wolf cases back to back. Together, they could decide whether Gray Wolves and Mexican Wolves keep federal protection.

The biggest case is the government’s appeal of a 2022 ruling that threw out the first Trump administration’s delisting and restored federal protection to Gray Wolves across the lower 48, outside the northern Rockies. If the government wins, that protection ends across most of the lower 48.

The second is about the northern Rockies, where protection was already stripped in 2011 and Idaho, Montana and Wyoming decide what happens to wolves. In 2025, a Montana judge ruled the government wrongly refused to consider protecting wolves across the West again. The government wants that ruling thrown out. If it wins, the door to restoring protection in the northern Rockies closes.

The third is about the Southwest’s only wild Mexican Wolves, about 300 of them, which the government labels “nonessential” to the species’ survival. Advocates are appealing to get that label overturned.

The feds already lost the first two fights in lower courts. They came back anyway. Arguing for wolves were Earthjustice for Defenders of Wildlife and partners, the Center for Biological Diversity, Humane World for Animals and the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project. Standing with the government were the NRA, Safari Club International, the Farm Bureau, and cattle and sheep industry groups.

The science is on the wolves’ side, and so were the last two judges who heard these cases. But when one judge asked what would stop this country from wiping out wolves again, the government offered five years of monitoring and a “sensitive species” label on federal land. That’s the safety net they’re offering. Thousands of Gray Wolves are already hunted down each year.

The court hasn’t said when it will rule, and this administration isn’t waiting. Raise your voice: tell Congress to keep Gray Wolves & Mexican Wolves federally protected at the link in our bio.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨

USDA just told every wolf state to take another look at its protections. Not its science. Its protections.

The memo urges states to loosen wolf protections and send @usdagov more requests to kill wolves, before the federal government has even finished deciding whether Gray Wolves and Mexican Wolves keep their Endangered Species Act protection. Killing first, paperwork later. Secretary Burgum’s decision is due in early December.

Ten states, roughly 8,000 Gray Wolves in the lower 48. Three of them, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, already decide what happens to their wolves. The other seven would only if protection comes off. This memo is the Administration leaning on all of them, and on Burgum, at once.

Tell Congress: keep Gray Wolves and Mexican Wolves federally protected. The letter is found at the link in our bio and only takes 30 seconds to send.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

This moving short film, directed by Rain, provides crucial insight into how wolves are foundational to many Indigenous cultures and how the Trump Administration’s removal of federal protections from wolves in 2020 severely undermined tribal cultures.

We cannot let it happen again!

Last year, @usdagov Wildlife Services killed 2,833,285 animals using YOUR tax dollars. That’s more than 7,700 animals every single day.

Wolves. Coyotes. Bears. Foxes. Raccoons. Cats. Robins. Pigeons. 🐺🦊🐻🦝🐈🕊️

Shot from helicopters. Stuck to glue traps. Poisoned with cyanide. All to protect the interests of Big Ag.

And the killing is growing: 900,000+ more animals killed than the year before. 📈

This program is funded by the public, which means the public can change it. @secrollins needs to hear from voters that we want our tax dollars to stop paying for killing. 🗳️

NEW ACTION ALERT!

On September 4, the President signed an executive order that gives Interior Secretary Burgum until December 3 to decide whether Gray Wolves and Mexican Wolves should lose their federal protections. It doesn’t stop there. The same order tells Interior to write the delisting bill for Congress and to lean on states to drop their own wolf protections too.

This is the third hit in four months. In July, the agencies erased the decades-old definition of “harm” that protected the places endangered animals live, and ended automatic protection for newly listed threatened species. The House has already passed a bill stripping Gray Wolves of federal protection. A second bill, to delist the Mexican Wolf, is waiting for a floor vote. There are about 317 Mexican Wolves left in the wild. Three hundred seventeen.

Roughly 8,000 Gray Wolves are found across ten states in the lower 48. Only three of those states already decide what happens to their wolves, and the hunts they run are recreational, every one of them. Take the federal protection off and the other seven could get the same green light.

Your representative gets to say no. Time is running out but fortunately, it only takes two minutes to send a letter urging Congress to keep wolf protections in place. Act now at the link in our bio!

Nine wolves believed to belong to one Wisconsin pack were trapped and killed by USDA Wildlife Services after the Wisconsin DNR cited verified threats to human safety.

This is a story about the authority Wildlife Services already has to kill wolves—and how quickly an entire pack can be erased when officials decide killing is the answer.

That matters because wolf-hunters constantly invoke safety to people and livestock as their justification for killing wolves. Wisconsin livestock producers deserve real support when wolves kill or injure livestock—prompt investigations, effective nonlethal deterrence, evidence-based conflict response, and fair compensation for verified losses. The state already has systems for addressing those conflicts.

But a recreational wolf hunt doesn't address any of that. It would not replace range riders, fladry, better husbandry, attractant removal, or compensation. It would not identify the specific wolf involved in a verified conflict. It would simply expand the number of people authorized to kill wolves—including wolves that have never gone near livestock, a home, or a person.

Wolf hunts aren't about safety. They are recreation. All wolf hunts are recreational.

That is why federal protection matters. Congress must stop turning wolves into political targets and keep Gray Wolves and Mexican Wolves protected under the Endangered Species Act. And right now, they are being pressured by Trump's executive order to hand control of wolves back over to the states nationwide.

We know what will happen. We must raise our voice. Send a letter to Congress today at the link in our bio!

Montana and Wyoming’s wolf hunts are now underway—and the bloodlust amongst hunters is as strong as ever.

This is the reality wolves already face when states are allowed to decide how many can be killed, how they can be killed, and whether anyone is held accountable for illegal kills.

These hunters celebrate the killing of wolves and encourage poaching through the phrase “Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up”—or SSS.

This is not responsible wildlife policy. It is hatred directed at an intelligent, social species—one that is critical to maintaining ecological balance—and it has real consequences.

Trump’s executive order does not delist wolves today. But it directs Secretary Burgum to decide whether Gray Wolves and Mexican wolves should lose federal protection. If that order succeeds, what is happening in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho could become the norm across the country: state-sanctioned killing, weakened safeguards, and more wolves treated as disposable.

We cannot let that happen.
