Very excited for tonight's opening of 'The Threshold Varies', guest curated by the incredible @madelinegallucci! Chicago is truly living up to its nickname today ("The Windy City"), yet may these winds draw you over to the West Town Studio between 5-8 p.m. for remarks by Madeline, a tour of our new-ish archives, and of course--this BRILLIANT exhibition featuring several outstanding Arts of Life artists and some of their professional artist peers without disabilities! So, here's a tiny peek for inspiration!

We’re excited to announce our next exhibition!

Please join us next Friday, March 13th from 5-8 p.m. for the opening reception of ‘The Threshold Varies’, guest curated by Madeline Gallucci of RADAR!

About the Exhibition: RADAR is pleased to present ‘The Threshold Varies’, a group exhibition featuring artists who engage in perception as something that is variable, contingent, and unstable. The works in this exhibition operate between containment and overflow, hovering at the limits of visibility and testing how intensity becomes legible.

In psychophysics, the idea of the ‘absolute threshold’ is defined by the minimum intensity required for a stimulus to be sensed. It is the point at which sound, color, or light crosses from not perceived into perceptible. It is a boundary that is never fixed, as it shifts with duration, proximity, and expectation—and with continual exposure becomes blurred over time.

In image-making, these boundaries are seen as similarly uncertain. We trust the image as it exists, relying on what is before us, even as its edges remain contingent and provisional. The works in this exhibition operate within this tension between containment and overflow, hovering at the limits of visibility and testing how intensity becomes legible.

RADAR is a curatorial platform supporting artists and their practices in the Midwest, founded by Madeline Gallucci. Learn more at @radar_____

Artspace Project Wall, Brandon Forrest Frederick

The Emily & Todd Voth Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute is pleased to announce a new Artspace Project Wall that draws upon its 25-year history of engagement with important KCAI-affiliated artists and collaborators.

For this project, Chicago-based guest curator Madeline Gallucci (’12 Printmaking) has partnered with artist Brandon Forrest Frederick (’11 Photography) to create a new work for the Artspace’s Project Wall.

In An illusive view in an illuminated field, Frederick builds on his ongoing interest in the natural world, beauty, contemporary states of being, and photography within our physical and digital lives. In Frederick’s image, he combines gestures of landscape and still life, alongside manipulations of collage and sculpture, then packages and compresses them within a single picture plane.

Frederick’s composition suspends time in multiple forms: where the hand has pressed and crumpled, and where gradient and light suggest a continuous space that is, at once, both flattening and infinite.

An illusive view in an illuminated field explores the collapse of distance between image and material, form and concept, where gradients become spaces of transition, play, and pause. The work resists the disembodiment of digital life, offering a tactile and organic counterbalance to our collective consumption of images online.
