Janelle Lynch found the shape before the light.

For Summer Wreath, she noticed the colors and the shape formed by plants on her Catskills property. She set up the camera, kept a cattle gate and a snow fence outside the frame, and watched the light move. Ten hours later, it reached the wreath.

What stays with me is that she had already found the composition. Waiting allowed her to photograph the form she had noticed in the light she wanted. Choosing the frame and choosing the moment were separate parts of making this image.

Her attention to light also changed through painting. She describes spending hundreds or thousands of hours mixing and studying color. What did that change in her photographs?

I had a wonderful time at the @prcboston gala this past Saturday. I was honored to be one of the mentors for their 50th Anniversary Mentorship Program, which allowed me to work with @alinabalseiroart over a 6-month period as they developed a body of work and prepared it for exhibition.

My relationship with the PRC began many years ago when I was an undergrad at @massartboston, and they provided important early support of my work (thank you @leslie.k.brown!). I’m excited for their next chapter!

And, it’s always a delight to be back with my Boston + MassArt photo fam. ❤️📷❤️
