Day 6/7– My first mountain summit.

After a night in the snow cave, Olly and I climbed up to Mueller Hut. Just before the final push to the summit of Mt Olliver, we stopped for a debrief and yarned about what it had taken to get there: the heavy packs, the cold, the dark and all the moments where it would’ve been easier to turn back.

That’s what these days have been teaching me. Getting uncomfortable doesn’t make the hard parts disappear, but every time you keep moving through them, you start to trust yourself a little more. The next challenge doesn’t feel quite so impossible.

Standing on my first summit with my good mate Olly was already special. Finding out Mt Olliver was also Sir Edmund Hillary’s first mountain, when he was 20, made it feel even more surreal.

Day 6 – We woke up in the snow cave we’d dug, looking across Hooker Valley to Aoraki / Mount Cook. Olly and I climbed the ridge towards Mueller Hut, with amazing views of Mueller Glacier and the Annette Plateau, before taking on the final 130 metres to the summit of Mount Ollivier.

Once we reached the top, we took a proper look around. We watched what looked like tens of thousands of tonnes of snow and ice break away from the huge ice shelf below Mount Sefton and tumble into the valley. We could see Mueller Glacier in all its glory.

My first ever mountain summit, alongside my good mate Olly. Pretty special knowing Sir Edmund Hillary made his first major climb on this same mountain, aged 20, back in 1939.

Incredibly hard and well outside my comfort zone, but what a day.

Day 5 – With 20kg packs, Olly and I set off after he finished work. I hiked from the bottom up to Sealy Tarns in my @norsewear socks, then we pushed up into the snow and high mountains in the dark with crampons and ice axes. We dug out a snow cave, got to bed around midnight and woke up to the best view.

It was incredibly hard and way outside my comfort zone, but it was all preparation for my first mountain summit on Day 6.
