The St. Simons Land Trust is ready for fall semester with the help of three Environmental Science majors from College of Coastal Georgia! @ssyyllvviiaaaa is a newbie “bird nerd” and a veteran dog lover. @hannah.phillips3 is your field guide expert with a coffee addiction. @raegan_higgins , a plant photographer, has an unrealistic (or is it?) fear of mosquitoes. With a well-rounded resume like this, we couldn’t say no. Sylvia, Hannah and Raegan will help the Land Trust these next few months with collecting social media content and also produce a fun, informative series for our followers. We hope you are just as excited as we are to follow along to see the results of this service-learning project with @coastalgeorgia 🌱

This is one of the busiest yet most rewarding summers of my life. I got the privilege to be surrounded by so much love, excitement, and knowledge. There are so many moments in these pictures I’ll cherish forever🤍 Ohhhh and I SAW A BABY SEA TURTLE!!! This is me and my childhood best friend playing dress up at her beautiful beach wedding in Panama City. It was incredible to see so many formative people for who I am, all grown up. And don’t she just look soooo perrrtyyy:) cheers to Mr and Mrs Harper:)🥂 This is the first of many pictures to come from my Coastal Research Methods week long field trip to Sapelo island. The island itself is so incredibly rich with history, knowledge, beautiful landscapes and important research. Getting to work first hand on so many different research projects was definitely a huge leap forward in my career. These are some pictures of hard work, cool organisms, and way to many seed ticks. THIS IS ME SEEING NOAH KAHAN LIVE AND I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT IT EVER!!!! HE PLAYED PAIN IS COLD WATER AND MAINE ARE WE SERIOUS?!?!? Dis is my college friend group losing 2 key members to something called graduation idk I can’t even think to hard about it. I miss you two constantly. Why leave?! Come back. These are the only 2 pictures to come out of an eventful Owens family vacation to Destin. Goshhhh I love me some Owens’s :) Did I mention before the my trip to sapelo granted me a stay at the UGA marine institute. A place where some of the greatest founding minds for ecology work tirelessly to teach us so much about our world. Not to mention the island is home to the first African American Baptist church which still roars with worship. The views are so beyond incredible to see, man how blessed am I?? THIS IS THE AFOREMENTIONED BABY SEA TURTLE!!! We got so lucky and just happened upon the last of the nests residents going to live a long life. Watching this little one make its way to the water was truly something I will never forget. Old grandma Hannah will tell her grandchildren about it. Dude it was literally the coolest. This is me and my favorite people at the Georgia aquarium for Dirts birthday. Look how cute we are watching da fishies.

What a dream come true!!! I was able to spend a week on Sapelo Island doing research! Best experience ever with the best people! Learning how to dig a soil pit, everything that goes into doing one, and how to collect data from it! A butterfly stingray we caught while doing a trawl! Butterfly stingrays are absolutely beautiful. Ghost crab hunting on the beach to get their biometrics! Owling! Unfortunately, we didn’t see any owls, but still had a great time! Mushroom hunting for species on Sapelo! Inside of an ancient shell ring! I was able to catch a lot of ghost crabs using the hat method(iykyk)! Morning sunrise walk where I was able to find some really cool Knobbed Whelk that were empty! Collecting data from a soil pit! Post trawl walk back to the cow truck! Collecting data on one of the trawls! Beautiful night at the marsh looking for Periwinkle Snails! More data collection for the trawls! One of our many stops on our ride around the island! Presenting our research on organic matter in the soil of the salt marsh! We took soil cores from two different areas in the marsh where different vegetation was present to see if there was a difference in the amount of organic matter present. Summer Symposium at CCGA! Presenting our research of mark recapture of Periwinkle Snails! We found periwinkles in three different areas of the marsh based on vegetation, did biometrics, and put a dot of paint on the snail shell then went back a few days later and looked in same areas to see if the snails we found were still there or had moved. We even found snails from previous years! A fun fact about Periwinkle Snails is that they are fungal farmers!!! Presenting our research on dune area species curves! We did species area curves on each side of an anthropogenic structure to see if there was a difference on each side to show the impact of the structure to the dune vegetation. Water quality! We did water quality at each high, low, and mid tide for a couple of days.

wow what a blessing this semester has been! this semester has truly opened my eyes and filled my cup up. the patience of the Lord through meeting all of the people i have meet this semester just shows how GREAT He is! I don’t think i would be where i am if it wasn’t for the people that i have surrounded around me. the Lord was oh so patient with me, this semester He truly opened my eyes to see that there is hope at the end of my brokenness. I thank God everyday for the people He has placed in my life and what a privilege it is to call them MY PEOPLE!! The good times and the bad times of these last couple of months have strengthened me in my faith and for that i will be forever grateful🩷🩷 on to semester 4!!
