So grateful to have brought together students, climate activists and friends from different walks of life to discuss how financial stress and how our lived experience of the economy shows up in our personal and cultural dreams of 'the good life.'

How do we meet people where they are at, within their own communal, emotional and economic contexts - when we really need to collectively move towards systemic change? This was the tension that someone in the room named. From scarcity or abundant money beliefs inherited from families, the performance of internet tradwifeism monetizing on dreams of perfect motherhood in the age of hypercapitalism, to the tension of the US military being one of the world's biggest employers - we all showed up and talked about the topic of money and security from the micro to the macro.

It meant so much to me to have been invited back to London, my former home to host this workshop❤️ Thank you @ukycc_org and @uclcas - and for everyone who was a part of it

In Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the good life is anything but slow. Shenzhen is intimidatingly hypermodern - its the silicon valley hardware capital of China with robots and electric cars everywhere. It draws in migrants from all over the country under the banner of "wherever you come from, you are now from Shenzhen." Calling in a new American dream - some call it a cultural desert, while for others its the epidemy of a new economic abundance and progress. Hong Kong on the other hand, feels like anything but a cultureless place, with its national pride, dizzying heights and dreams of freedom. And it is also the most unaffordable city in the world - its inequality and neoliberalism inherited from its former colonial occupier England.

Concepts like our urgent need for sustainability and degrowth sometimes feel like abstractions here (many efforts have been made), but I can't ever bring myself to put forward a black and white "should be" lens onto the chaos and aliveness of the Asian megacities, in which the warmth and energy of the people have also shaped me and millions of people. In all of these contradictions, Im just left with the wonder of how we undamn conversations around our globally different perceptions of the good life - and if it actually brings us, the good life.
