Honored to have received the Distinguished Leadership & Service Award from @woodsideonthemove, where I had previously served as Executive Director and Board Member. It was wonderful to see former co-workers, community leaders, and even the WOTM Founder Kevin Mahon’s family together all under one roof. Happy 50 years, WOTM, and here’s to the next chapter of one of Queens’ most historic organizations!

This FAHM has given me moments to notice the wonderful connections I have w/ amazing educators, creatives & community advocates. Here are a few snapshots of last week alone:

1 & 2) Assemblyperson Steve Raga recognized and awarded myself and my kasamas, Carolina & Kort, for our community advocacy work at the Little Manila Parade and Block Party for Filipino American History Month. (10/18) @ragaforqueens @k0rt_x

3 & 4) Actor, filmmaker & friend, Claro de los Reyes screens his film Sand Streets and joins Prof. Michael Salgarolo and Caroline C. Pasionto share the stories of Filipinos in 1930s Brooklyn, NY at Reimaging Filipino Brooklyn (10/15). Can you spot my very, very brief cameo? @clarodelosreyes @msalgarolo @unassimilatednyc

5 & 6) My sister, Cheryl, my friend, Janele, and I facilitated Talambuhay, a sharing of our/our families’ immigration stories, with the Filipino American community out in Nyack, NY at our friends’ restaurant, Karenderya. (10/17) @senshen6 @karenderya_ny @janeletimetravels

I met Cristian and his mom, both students at the Culinary Education Center in Woodside where @uniteherelocal100 just cut the ribbon on their new facility. For so long there’s been an assumption that some jobs are going to be low-wage jobs without benefits and a secure retirement. @unitehere has shown all across the country that there’s nothing inherent in a job and nothing inevitable in our economy that makes that so. Local 100 members keep this city running in restaurants, cafeterias, stadiums, airports, and more. And they prove that these jobs can and should be good jobs.

@thecec100 will provide training so workers, like Cristian and his mom, have every opportunity to build a good life in the city.

Congrats, President Maldonado, Secretary Treasurer Lozado, the entire team at Local 100, Cindy Noble and @compassgroupusa! Great seeing so many friends and electeds, including @grace4ny, @johnliunyc, @martinezforqueens, @aberkawasand, @ragaforqueens, @brianr4ny, @nysensepulveda, and UNITE HERE International President Gwen Mills. Celebrating the space and the people opening new doors here.

Last weekend, @damayanmigrantworkers co-founder and former executive director Linda Oalican received one of the New York State Assembly Distinguished Achievement Award for Filipino American History Month (FAHM), in the Advocacy category, at the first-ever Filipino American History Month (FAHM) Little Manila Parade and Celebration in Woodside, Queens.

A former political prisoner, domestic worker, and cancer survivor, Linda brings nearly six decades of experience organizing the most marginalized in the Philippines and in the US. During her speech, she centered the Filipino migrant workers and domestic workers she has long served and their contribution to US society.
