TANNER STOWERS-SMITH: HOMECOMING 🇳🇿

Born and raised in Christchurch, Tanner Stowers-Smith’s journey began with the Halswell Hornets before he played First XV rugby at St Bede’s College.

Tanner excelled in both rugby union and rugby league as a schoolboy but chose league after leaving school.

He joined the Warriors’ development system in 2023, captaining their SG Ball Cup side before quickly progressing into reserve grade. That same year, he represented Kiwis A in their victory over Tonga A.

In 2025, Tanner made his NRL debut and became Warrior #292. After a breakout 2026 season, the 22-year-old earned selection in New Zealand’s Rugby League World Cup squad.

“I’ve always dreamed of wearing this jersey.”

Representing the Kiwis would also continue a remarkable family legacy.

Tanner is the great-grandson of legendary former Kiwis captain Pat Smith, who captained New Zealand in all 10 of his Test appearances between 1947 and 1949.

Now Tanner has returned to his hometown as the Kiwis prepare to face the Cook Islands in Ōtautahi.

A proud Cantabrian, he lived through the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and understands what sport—and this occasion—means to the city.

If his opportunity comes on Sunday, his first Kiwis appearance could arrive at home, in front of his whānau and the community that helped shape him.

Christchurch born. Halswell developed. Home with the Kiwis.

41,255 fans. A packed Allianz Stadium. A massive night for international rugby league. 🖤🤍

I’ll put my hand up — I thought opening the World Cup on a Thursday night was a mistake. Well, I got that one wrong! 😂 Happy to be proven wrong with a turnout like that.

We’ve seen Samoan and Tongan supporters turn up in force over the years, bringing incredible pride, passion and atmosphere. Getting that same turnout for the Kiwis and Kangaroos hasn’t always been easy.

So Thursday night deserves some recognition. The biggest crowd of the World Cup’s opening round, and Sydney’s biggest rugby league Test crowd since 1974. That’s huge. 👏

Reports also highlighted a strong Kiwi presence in the stands — plenty of black jerseys backing our boys on Australian soil.

And the support keeps coming. The Kiwis v Cook Islands and Kiwi Ferns v France double-header in Ōtautahi Christchurch is sold out too! 🔥

A massive turnout in Sydney, followed by huge support back home. For New Zealand Rugby League, that’s something to celebrate.

Let’s keep that support rolling through the tournament.

Up the Kiwis! 🇳🇿

CHARNZE NICOLL-KLOKSTAD: HONOURED. PROUD. GRATEFUL. 🇳🇿

Born in Auckland, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad grew up playing junior rugby league for City Newton, Mount Albert, Waitemata and Richmond.

His journey has been shaped by family, sacrifice and resilience.

When Charnze was a teenager, his mother Monica was sent to prison. His father Perry stepped up and raised Charnze and his nine siblings during an incredibly difficult period for the family.

They also lost Charnze’s older brother Tyson, who passed away from muscular dystrophy at just 19.

At 15, Charnze moved with his family to Melbourne, where he played for the Altona Roosters before entering the Melbourne Storm system.

Proud of his Cook Islands, Māori and Norwegian heritage, Charnze has spoken openly about learning more about his identity so he can pass that knowledge on to his children.

“A lot of our identity starts with our names and pronouncing it is a part of that.”

His Māori whakapapa connects him to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, with his whānau coming from the Taupō region.

Charnze first represented the Cook Islands in 2015 before making his Kiwis Test debut against Australia in 2019, becoming Kiwi #820.

One of his greatest moments in the black and white came in 2023. Despite carrying a broken rib, Charnze produced a player-of-the-match performance as New Zealand defeated Australia 30–0.

“I’m honoured, proud, grateful – so many emotions and feelings.”

From Auckland to Melbourne and back home again, Charnze’s journey is about understanding who he is, carrying his whānau with him and representing Aotearoa with pride.

RONALDO MULITALO: PRIDE IN THE JERSEY 🇳🇿

Born and raised in Auckland, Ronaldo Mulitalo began playing rugby league with the Ellerslie Eagles before moving to Queensland with his family at 13.

His pathway included the Ipswich Jets, Queensland age-group teams and an NRL debut for the Cronulla Sharks in 2019.

Ronaldo was selected to play State of Origin in 2021, only to be ruled ineligible shortly before kickoff because his family had moved to Queensland after his 13th birthday.

He reset his sights on representing his country of birth and made his Kiwis debut against Tonga in Auckland in 2022, becoming Kiwi #824 and scoring a try.

“One of the things that tested me was people questioning my pride in New Zealand and my jersey.”

“I’m not just here because I’m here, I’m here to bring my game and put some pride in the jersey.”

Ronaldo played a starring role in New Zealand’s historic 30–0 victory over Australia in the 2023 Pacific Championships final.

Proud of both his New Zealand and Samoan heritage, Ronaldo says he respects both countries by giving everything whenever he takes the field.

After suffering a ruptured ACL while playing for the Kiwis in 2025, he fought his way back into the NRL and earned selection for New Zealand’s 2026 World Cup squad.

“I will always put my hand up to represent them and hopefully bring another World Cup back home. I won’t let them down, I owe the country a lot.”

Born in Auckland. Raised through the Ellerslie Eagles. Proudly wearing the black and white.
