Side story to my daughter’s law school graduation:

My mother-in-law met Jesus at Thanksgiving, leaving behind her husband of over 60 years. My husband’s dad. Pops to the grandkids.

At Christmas my daughter invited Pops to come with us from TX to her graduation in PA. He is from Pennsylvania and a big Penn State fan so he was “in!”

But—he wanted to drive. And was adamant he would drive alone.

Pops will be 90 in another week!! You would never know it but still we were apprehensive about him making the long trek from Waco TX to PA…alone!

We realized though the solo time in his car, “Bubba,” the freedom and adventure of the road and a final time back to his home-land would be cathartic for him.

And it has been.

He was giddy to be with us and for the reunion the next few days with his Best Man, also a widower. And thrilled by my daughter’s martini-themed surprise birthday celebration of him the night before her big day! Gifts in the middle of his grief.

And for her, what a precious gift to have him there, beaming with pride cheering her on!

Life is but a vapor made more evident by aging and loss… two things these also seem to increase: gratitude and intentionality. At least to me. Do you feel that too?

Proud and grateful mom post for what she accomplished, yes…but even more so what God is doing in her.

And first & foremost & forever, I love you, Rebecca, because of nothing you’ve done but for who God made you.

But now let’s celebrate! See you tomorrow👩🏻‍🎓🎉
