There are days I look at this picture and smile. Not because everything has been perfect. Not because I’ve had all the answers. Not because I’ve gotten fatherhood right every time. I smile because I know what a gift it is to help shape six human beings.

Some are mine by birth. Some are mine by love, presence, responsibility, and relationship. And others aren’t in the picture but also my responsibility

And if I’m honest, being a father and father figure has taught me far more than I’ve taught them. They’ve taught me patience when I wanted speed. Grace when I wanted perfection. Perspective when I was focused on problems.
Humility when I thought I knew enough.

They’ve taught me that leadership isn’t about being in charge. It’s about showing up. Again. And again. And again.

It’s answering questions when you’re tired.
Having hard conversations when it’s uncomfortable.
Being an example when nobody is handing out awards for it.

The older they get, the more I realize that these young people are becoming their own individuals with their own dreams, personalities, opinions, and purpose. My job isn’t to control who they become. My job is to help them discover who they are. And that responsibility is one of the most humbling things I’ve ever experienced.

If these six humans remember anything about me years from now, I hope they remember that I loved them deeply, believed in them relentlessly, and did my best to show them what integrity, faith, resilience, and ownership look like in real life.

Fatherhood has stretched me. It has challenged me. It has exposed me. And it has made me a better man.

For that, I’ll always be grateful.

Happy Father’s Day to all brothas!
