Many thanks to the Grolier Club for hosting the “Creative Collaboration” symposium Sue Gosin and I conceived in association with the exhibition we curated “Pioneers in Hand Papermaking: 50 Years of Innovation at Dieu Donné” on view at the Grolier Club through November 28. Many thanks to the always amazing Brett Littman for serving as MC for the day!

What a fabulous day celebrating Dieu Donné with engaging panels with artists, scholars, curators and master papermakers I have the greatest admiration for! AND even included an audience engaged performance with artist Ann Hamilton. What a day!!!

i was honored to be among a talented and varied group of artists presenting at the @atlanta_bushwick_bookclub this past sunday at the margaret mitchell house. @cebocampbell "sky full of elephants" inspired spirited, rhythmic, and deeply personal artistic responses. it was a treat to witness how each artist digested the words and transformed them into something uniquely their own.

a beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling, interpretation, and the magic that happens when art inspires art.

special thanks to the atlanta bushwick book club and my fellow artists olu amoda, hannah israel, kristina jones, ryan jones, katina pappas-deluca, josé perez, ashley perrymond, ato ribeiro, steven williams, and xpj7 for sharing their gifts and making the evening so memorable. grateful to have been part of it!

Last night, during a rainy night in Georgia, Atlanta Bushwick Bookclub hosted an evening of artistic inspirations from Cebo Campbell’s “Sky Full of Elephants” in the Trellis Room of the Margaret Mitchell House. The room was full of warmth and creativity while visual, musical, and word artists shared their creations. It was a time to consider the power of the stories we tell ourselves (as well as those that others tell about us) and the importance of claiming the power of our histories and futures. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Special thanks to the artists: Olu Amoda, Jonathan Samuel Eddy, Hannah Israel, Kristina Jones, Ryan Jones, Katina Pappas-DeLuca, José Perez, Ashley Perrymond, Ato Ribeiro, Steven Williams, and XPJ7 for their participation in what continues to be an evolving experience of the magical alchemy of books and art.

Our next event will be artistic inspirations from “Circe” by Madeline Miller to be held the first weekend of December. Additional details forthcoming!

Hope to see you there!

The Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery at Columbus State University presents:
About America: Liberty, Legacy, and Loyalty
at 250
October 6 - November 28, 2026
Curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 8,
5:00pm - 7:00pm

While this exhibition commemorates the United States’ semi quincentennial, it also provides an opportunity for thoughtful reflection and reminds us of our shared humanity— even during periods of civic adversity. Moreover, this exhibition and associated programming demonstrate the capacity of the academic arena to act as a catalyst for increasing public awareness and appreciation of the essential role visual arts play in interpreting our world, collective histories, and contemporary events.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Hannah Israel, Professor of Art and Director of the Illges Gallery for her support and unwavering commitment to realizing this compelling exhibition.

We are thrilled that Hannah Israel will be joining Atlanta Bushwick Bookclub’s show on artistic inspirations from Cebo Campbell’s “Sky Full of Elephants” on October 4th!

Born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Hannah Israel is an artist, educator, and curator based in Columbus, Georgia. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and her BA in Art History from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Israel has an extensive exhibition record spanning national and international venues. Her work has been exhibited at Atlanta Contemporary, Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta, the Kentler International Drawing Space in New York, The Columbus Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Zuckerman Museum of Art, the Vargas Museum in the Philippines, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Honolulu, I-Space in Chicago, and the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois, among others. Across these exhibitions, Israel explores materiality, spatial experience, and the poetic tension between presence and absence.

Her forthcoming solo exhibitions include presentations at SPAACES Contemporary Art Center in Sarasota, Florida; Moon Gallery at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia; and Lyndon House Arts Center in Athens, Georgia.

Israel’s commitment to artistic research is further reflected in her participation in distinguished residency programs. She has completed residencies at the Banff Centre for Creativity and Innovation in Canada, the Serenbe AIR Program’s Line and Chance Fellowship in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, and the Sculpture Residency at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. These experiences have deepened her engagement with site, environment, and collaboration, informing her studio practice as well as her approaches to teaching and curatorial work.
