SHOP link in bio. WALI “YOUNGBLOOD” MUHAMMAD: Boxing’s Silent Gentleman. WALI MUHAMMAD (formerly known as Walter Youngblood or “Blood”) was born in Louisiana in 1927. He lived in Harlem for most of his adult life. From 1948 through 1964, Wali Muhammad was frequently in the employ of Sugar Ray Robinson, watching over his boxing equipment and serving as a personal aide. Offered here is @raincheck.inc ‘s reproduction of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy sweatshirt which was given to then Walter Youngblood, worn at the Deer Lake training camp of Muhammad Ali in the early 1970’s. LITTLE KNOWN HISTORY
Wali spent time at Sugar Ray’s Cafe, which was a magnet for the entertainment elite. He worked behind the scenes in Muhammad Ali’s training camp at Fighter’s Heaven [see previous post] , and was a key cornerman from the first Ali-Frazier fight on. Youngblood was with Ali for all the Frazier fights, Foreman, Spinks, and the bad beats against Holmes and Berbick. Dubbed “The Silent Gentleman”, there aren’t many photos of Wali, and he was a man of few words. This left his life a mystery for boxing experts to decode later — or never. He had a “magical presence ringside, with no singular explanation as to why his presence was so powerful. “My grandmother raised me,” Wali recalled. “My mother had me at seventeen and then she was gone. When I was three, my grandmother started taking me to the fields. I’d sit on the sack and she dragged me along while she picked cotton. When I was five, I started picking cotton myself. At the end of each day, my grandmother would give me a nickel or a dime. I came north when I was fifteen. I boxed a bit. Then I got cut in a fight and the doctor said, if I fought again, it would endanger my eyesight. And I had a glass chin; that didn’t help either. So I stopped boxing.” Special thanks to: “The Sweet Science”, January 17, 2012 Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent. RAINCHK.COM | RAINCHECK™️ Fashion crew neck design

SHOP link in bio. MUHAMMAD ALI Training Camp T-Shirt (1980, For Holmes Fight)

On October 2, 1980 Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes fought former champion Muhammad Ali at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The aging Ali could not stand up to his talented former sparring partner and was systematically taken apart until the fight ended by TKO in round 11.

Holmes was deeply upset the once great Ali had to absorb so much punishment before the fight was stopped.

Presented here is a Reproduction Zip Hoody and Tee from Ali’s training camp for this fight at Deer lake Camp in PA. FIGHTER’S HEAVEN — DEER LAKE, PA

On a few acres of mountaintop in northeastern Pennsylvania, far from the big city lights normally associated with the “sweet science”, sits a sacred site in boxing history. Here Muhammad Ali, arguably the greatest fighter of all time, built a training camp near Deer Lake. He called it “Fighter’s Heaven” and trained here for many of his epic battles. Ali’s sessions were open to the public and Sportswriters alike. No other athlete in history was as accessible to the general public as Ali was at Deer Lake — a rare place where mortals could stroll with gods. Ali trained there until his last fight in 1981 with Trevor Berbick, billed as “Drama in Bahama”. Ali was 39 years old, and Berbick 27 years. The fight went the distance with Berbick winning by decision. Many champions retire on a loss. It’s NOT what they do LAST that defines them, but what we all do WELL, in the time we have. If you’ve taken a swing at us lately — knocked us down, feeling strong, remember: time is the champion of the world, and time is our training camp. SHOP link in bio. ALEXIS ARGÜELLO Training Camp Tee Shirt (1986, Costello Fight). HISTORY: On February 9, 1986 at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada light welterweights Alexis Arguello and Billy Costello squared off in the main event. Arguello prevailed by stopping Costello in the 4th round of a scheduled ten rounder. The series is a reproduction of the training camp tee shirt for Alexis Arguello from this fight, originally from the collection of trainer Eddie Futch. Alexis Argüello (April 19, 1952 – July 1, 2009) was a Nicaraguan professional boxer who competed from 1968 to 1995, and later became a politician. He was a three-weight world champion, having held the WBA featherweight title from 1974 to 1976; the WBC super featherweight title from 1978 to 1980; and the WBC lightweight title from 1981 to 1982. Additionally, he held the Ring magazine and lineal featherweight titles from 1975 to 1977; the Ring lightweight title from 1981 to 1982; and the lineal lightweight title in 1982. In his later career, he challenged twice for light welterweight world titles, both times in famous fights against Aaron Pryor. Argüello has regularly been cited as one of the greatest boxers of his era, having never lost ANY of his world titles in the ring, instead relinquishing them each time in pursuit of titles in higher weight classes.

After his retirement from boxing, he became active in Nicaraguan politics, and in November 2008 was elected mayor of his native Managua, the nation’s capital city.

The Ring magazine has ranked Argüello as 20th on their list of “100 greatest punchers of all time”, while the Associated Press ranked him as the world’s best Junior Lightweight of the 20th century.

He was named ONE OF THE 20 GREATEST FIGHTERS OF THE PAST 80 YEARS BY THE RING MAGAZINE and is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers to ever come out of Latin America and ONE OF THE VERY FEW TO HAVE FOUGHT IN FOUR DIFFERENT DECADES.
