Volunteer trail maintenance in a bamboo forest in Makaleha, on the island of Kauai. We chopped & moved away the sharp hazards (protruding bamboo) and made the trail nice.

The bamboo forest is big and one of many hidden away in the interior of Kauai where highways can't reach. We also rearranged rocks in Makaleha Stream where people would cross the stream to enter the bamboo forest. Hikes with streams rely heavily on the weather. Don't go here if the falls/streams high up on the mountain face are visible from afar, because those tributaries are the stream's source and in turn make the stream raging in power. We try to hike only when the mountain face is dry (no visible streams/falls), when Makaleha Stream becomes more gentle.

Bridges symbolize the human will and effort to connect two places that were not originally connected, and the desire to pass freely between two worlds.

During our hike on the Kuamo'o Trail, we passed over this bridge which separates the residential area of Wailua Homesteads from the outer slopes of Mount Nounou (The Sleeping Giant). We chose to hike this trail (the longest of the three Nounou trails) partly because we haven't done so in years, and also for a change of scenery, since we usually hike the Nounou East Trail.
