Don't confuse a non-linear career with a lesser one-Jessica Rudd

Jessica Rudd - 23 Years in the Marine Corps, First as a Marine and Then as a Spouse

Jessica Rudd is a management consultant supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs and the chairwoman of the board of directors at the Military Spouse Advocacy Network. She is a Marine Corps veteran and a Marine Corps spouse, 23 years in the Corps, first sworn in and then married in.

She enlisted in 2006 and served until 2010. After that she worked in corporate America, stayed home with her three kids, homeschooled them, and ran her workday out of the master bedroom closet at 29 Palms. Her husband later spent three years at Headquarters Marine Corps as the monitor, the assignment officer who cuts orders for the officer community. The family lives in Quantico, Virginia, and her consulting job came through a referral from her military spouse network.

In this conversation, she covers how she got back into the job market after years at home, what a useful ask sounds like when you reach out for help, and why so many military spouses undersell what they bring to an employer.

She trusts her network more than Google. She recommends telling people you are looking, points readers to How Women Rise, and describes treating yourself as your own career manager instead of assuming a company is doing it for you. Keep something on the side that moves with you. Contact the network the day new orders land, and find someone who has already been stationed where you are headed.

Her story makes the case that flexibility does not mean handing over ownership of your career, and that a non-linear career is not a lesser one.

This conversation is part of the National Military Spouse Network's (NMSN) Military Spouse Highlights series.

Don't let anyone talk you out of a 3k trip to Turks & Caicos, that 10k will be the best 20k you've ever spent with all the best people in your life.

👋 #TeamDeloitte spotlight: Jessica Rudd, Senior Consultant

"Here I stand at the @Deloitte Denver office more than 30 years after my uncle worked at this same branch.

I am a second generation Deloitte-er and in a lot of ways I have unintentionally followed the same footsteps of my late uncle. My uncle joined the Air Force and put himself through college. Shortly after that he received an offer from Deloitte.

Fast forward and I too joined the #MarineCorps and was fortunate to use my Post-9/11 GI Bill to also receive a college education. Then after years of trying, I received an offer from Deloitte organically during the peak of the pandemic in 2020.

All that to say, things have come full circle and more than three decades later… I’m here doing client work at the same office for the service branch that he once served in.

Deloitte took a chance on him back then and has invested in me now. The one thing that hasn’t changed is Deloitte’s mission to support the #VeteranCommunity." - @raisingruddlings
