Restoration work in progress at the Warakaulle family temple complex near Kandy together with Atthamma. In use since 300 BC, influenced by Brahmini and Buddhist monks, various ruling bloodlines, the Portuguese, the Dutch, Brits abroad. The adjoining cave systems have been used since prehistory (reaching back to the times of Homo sapiens balangodensis?) and occasionally by Kandyan kings escaping unpleasant seasonal visits. A condensed history of an island in one place.

"As far as I can remember I have been fascinated by the magnificent strangeness of nature, space, the why, the exploration of the unknown, the how. I think it was sparked in the untamed tropical family gardens of my youth in Sri Lanka. Observing patterns on leaves and wood with my dad, finding life with my cousins in the dense jungly undergrowth and little streams which ran like veins through the land, gazing at the stars and galaxies flickering brightly through the majestic crowns of coconut trees my ancestors had planted many moons ago. It was a curiosity which never left me."

1. दीवारों के भी कान होते हैं। (Walls have ears too) by Sajid Wajid Shaikh (@sajidwajidshaikh), winner of the first MTArt Agency (@mtartagency) x India Art Fair Artist Prize, an interactive installation of dynamic ear forms on the theme of mass-surveillance
2. Western Flag (NFT) by John Gerrard (@johngerrard.inst), from the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (@LACMA), reflects on the history of oil consumption and the climate crisis
3. Elevator to the Subcontinent by Gigi Scaria (@gigiscariaofficial) supported by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (@KNMAIndia), a multimedia installation of an elevator moving through the various social strata of India’s cities
4. Transformations, an immersive ‘mountainscape’ created with sustainable materials to serve as a canvas for physical and digital interventions by artists Skarma Sonam Tashi (@skarma_sonam_tashi) and Philipp Frank (@philipp.frank_), supported by sā (@saladakh), the German Embassy (@germanyinindia), and Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (@ladakhartsandmedia)

Posted @withregram • @dhoomimalgallery DMG is excited to support sā2023 (@saladakh), Asia’s highest ever contemporary land art group exhibition at 3600m. The exhibition focuses on climate, culture and community. Sā means soil, in Ladakh.

We're delighted to support sā co-founder and contemporary artist Raki Nikahetiya (@rakiography) on his monumental piece "For A 50 Million Years", which also includes a workshop with students from Ladakh on rammed earth and sustainable building materials.

"Our history has always been intertwined with the history of our landscapes. Over the last 50 million years the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates created this still-forming superstructure - the highest yet youngest mountain range on the planet. Building with visible layers from Ladakh’s soil prompts us to reflect on deep time, our landscapes, our origins, local identity, our (in)significance, and what we leave behind in the eons to come."- Raki

What is interdisciplinary photography?

During my residency at the @1worldfoundation in Sri Lanka I had the privilege to teach interdisciplinary photography to the senior students of the owf photography programme led by Sasindu Pramuditha.

During the time together the photographs taken by the students turned into poems, paintings, essays, and installations. Still images evolved into new things and reincarnated into other forms through the use of different disciplines. It was incredible to experience what the students managed to create in a short period of time.

There were no boundaries, no rules, no limits in creating, apart from one's own imagination. Through a collaborative approach with other disciplines we tried to see that everything was possible if thought and work was put into it - in the end photography that was just a starting point.
