Many women will tell you:

“That wouldn’t happen to me.”
“I wouldn’t put myself in that situation.”
“I would kick him in the groin.”
“I would poke him in the eye.”
“I would scream, run, or fight back.”
“My husband/son will protect me.”

But what happens when none of those options are immediately available?

A young woman in our community was allegedly attacked by someone who was already too close for many of these instinctive responses to be effective.

Self-defense is not simply about knowing how to strike. It’s about understanding how to progress when your options seem limited.

Learning even basic strategies to manage distance, improve your position, create space, and recognize new pathways to safety should be an essential part of every young woman’s education.

When people believe they have no way forward, they may stop trying—even when other options exist. Understanding those options can change how we respond to uncertainty.

Empowerment isn’t the belief that nothing bad will happen to you. It’s developing the knowledge, awareness, and practical skills to navigate difficult situations when they do arise.

A safer community begins with better education.

KNOW YOUR PATHWAYS.

One of my favorite ideas from Annie Duke's Thinking in Bets is that we have to be careful about judging a decision entirely by its outcome.

A good decision can produce a bad outcome.

A bad decision can produce a good outcome.

Martial arts is full of this.

You attempt something technically unsound against a beginner and it works.

Does that mean it was a good decision?

Not necessarily.

Maybe you were stronger.

Maybe you were faster.

Maybe your opponent didn't recognize the opening.

Maybe you simply got away with it.

Then we make one of the biggest mistakes in training:

We confuse success with validation.

Something worked, therefore we assume it was correct.

But training should be asking a deeper question:

Why did it work?

Was it the quality of the strategy?

Or did the circumstances allow a weak strategy to succeed?

This is where Thinking in Bets becomes incredibly relevant to martial arts.

Duke writes:

“What makes a decision great is not that it has a great outcome.”

That's a powerful distinction.

The objective of training isn't simply to collect successful outcomes.

It's to improve the quality of the decisions that produce those outcomes.

Because eventually you'll meet someone bigger, faster, younger, stronger or more experienced.

And the margin for a bad decision gets smaller.

Don't just ask:

“Did it work?”

Ask:

“Why did it work?”

That's where real learning begins.

This is Renzo Gracie @renzograciebjj
Long before Renzo Gracie became one of the most recognizable names in Jiu-Jitsu, before the legendary fights, @renzogracieacademy and generations of students who would carry his lineage around the world, he was a kid growing up in Rio de Janeiro surrounded by Jiu-Jitsu.
Born into the Gracie family, Renzo learned early that Jiu-Jitsu was much more than fighting. One of his greatest influences was his uncle, Rolls Gracie—a man Renzo followed, admired and learned from both on and off the mats. When Rolls tragically died in a hang-gliding accident while Renzo was only 15, he lost not only a teacher, but one of his greatest role models.
Renzo continued forward.
His journey took him through Jiu-Jitsu, Vale Tudo and some of the biggest stages of early MMA. He fought legends, won championships, suffered losses and never built his reputation by protecting a record. Renzo's mentality was simple: test yourself, learn and come back.
Then came New York.
Leaving Brazil in the 1990s, Renzo began building an academy while supporting his family and continuing his own fighting career. The beginning wasn't glamorous. He taught, trained and fought while slowly creating something much bigger than a gym.
That academy became a home to generations of practitioners and produced some of the most influential names in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, including @mattserrabjj, @ricardoalmeidabjj and @danaherjohn.
Through victories and defeats, personal loss, family, fatherhood, business and decades on the mats, Renzo kept moving forward.
Today, the Renzo Gracie name can be found on academies around the world—but his real legacy isn't the name on the door.
It's the people.
The students who became champions. The students who became teachers. And the countless people who walked onto his mats and carried a piece of what they learned into their own lives.
A fighter can build a record.
A teacher builds a lineage.
Renzo Gracie built a legacy.
Presently he is a coral belt

Hidden Roster: DREAM Edition

The first spiritual successor to PRIDE Fighting Championships, for a short time DREAM was one of the best MMA promotions in the world, sadly like most great things they didn’t last but they did put on some amazing fights while they were around.
DREAM was the home to high level fighters many of whom hadn’t competed in the UFC such as Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi, Mayhem Miller & Shinya Aoki.
But there were many fighters who only fought once or twice for the company before moving on including a few surprising names..

In Jiu-Jitsu, every move counts. Just like in chess, victory doesn’t go to the one who simply attacks, but to the one who thinks, observes, and makes the right move at the right moment.
Today, the mat was the chessboard. On one side, Renzo Mateus; on the other, Professor Ralek Gracie @ralekvision . It was more than just a training session it was a match defined by strategy, technique, and respect.

In BJJ, every sparring session is a game of chess... and every master teaches us to see a few moves ahead. #jiujitsulife #bjj #spartacusbjj #graciebjj #graciejiujitsu®

One of the best parts of a road trip is getting to stop and train with old friends.

Today I had the opportunity to visit AG1925 in Franklin, Tennessee, and spend some time on the mats with my friend, Ralek Gracie. It’s hard to believe we’ve known each other for nearly 30 years.

It was great catching up, seeing his beautiful new academy, and, as always, learning something new. That’s one of the things I love most about Jiu-Jitsu. No matter how long you’ve been training, there’s always another lesson waiting.

Ralek has built something really special. If you live in the Franklin/Nashville area, or you’re just passing through, do yourself a favor and drop in for a class. You’ll be welcomed by a world-class instructor, a great group of people, and an outstanding academy.

Thank you for the hospitality, my friend. It was an honor to spend time on the mats with you, and I look forward to the next visit.
