Day 11: Today concludes the 2026 Alcan 5000 Rally. I can't believe it's over already!

In classic Alcan fashion, today started off far from straight forward. The extreme control to Coldfoot (halfway up the notorious Dalton Highway) was canceled on the fly. Some of us left Fairbanks at 6am to complete the 12 hour in-and-out Arctic Circle crossing journey, but it was quickly apparent that the road was treacherous and sending an entire rally's worth of people up this road was not the right call. The organizers decided to instead allow competitors to run up to the Dalton sign and visit the hot springs to qualify for the "Go Further" award. We proceeded to do exactly as such, and got a much needed bonus hot spring visit out of the day!

The last day of the Alcan brings the final scores. For some time we have hilariously been in the overall lead. We are just two regular guys who do the Alcan for fun, and somehow found ourselves in the mix competing with Alcan legends such as the Sorenson's, and professional factory backed Toyota/Lexus and Ford teams. The final score came down to an incredibly tight points spread where one tiny mistake could have cost us both the First-in-Class win, and the First Overall win. To be completely honest, we expected the Ford team to squeak past us in the final hour. But we kept our cool on the TSD last night, and miraculously held the lead!

Winning the Alcan 5000 is something I did not think was possible for us. Some people here have done the rally far more times than us, and many compete in other rally's frequently. We show up every two years and try to remember how it's done! For us, it's never been about winning, but more about the journey and the people. Also being awarded the "True Spirit" award, a people's choice type award for embodying the spirit of the Alcan, meant a whole lot to us too! We can't do this without everyone's support, so it means a lot - thank you!

In the photos we have Alcan legends Diamond Jim and Jerry Hines, the Lilienthal's and Shane Bowman presenting their donation to Tok, Sandra and Becky receiving the Go Further, Yannick's True Spirit for knowing his limits, the two Touareg teams, and the moto gents!

Day 9: Mud, ruts, potholes, and a dream come true!

In mountaineering, reaching the summit isn't the ultimate end goal, it's also coming back down safely. Reaching the Arctic Circle was the goal, but it's not truly complete until you make it back down in one piece. The Dempster takes no prisoners, and you must endure it's tortures both north and southbound. Today, the Dempster was not a friend.

An early wake up call was met by rain, dense fog, and deep mud just about every corner we took. We scooped up the motorcycle crew at their hotel in the morning and the mood was grim. Everybody was thinking the same thing but nobody was saying it; the day was about to be cold, wet, and downright dangerous. Early reports from those ahead was that conditions were poor. In fact, they were more than poor. It was abismal.

The motos and the cars endured hours of relentless pot holes filled so deep with water that truly no matter which one you picked to go over, you almost certainly picked wrong. The Dempster claimed tires on a Touareg and a 4Runner today. The Dempster caused the motorcycles to overheat all day long with no reprieve. Precious time was spent on the side of the road clearing their radiators with water bottled from the creeks below the road, and then splashed on the radiators to loosen to concrete-like mud to then try and blow it out with compressed air. The rain started on cue as soon as the road gets worse. Fenders fell off bikes. Tank bags fell off bikes. But most importantly, nobody fell off the bikes today and that is frankly one of the most incredible feats I have ever witnessed.

The motorcycle team's relentlessness and preparedness was like nothing I've ever witnessed before. We got tortured in the car by the road, yet these guys went through it a thousand times worse. These gents are the real deal.

We finished the day in Dawson City, a gold rush town stuck in a time capsule in the 1890's. The quirkiness of the town always delights, even down to the post-it note check-in system at our tiny hotel. I wish I had the energy to stay up and see if the northern lights will come out to play tonight, but a long road over the Top of the World awaits tomorrow!

Day 7: The Dempster - Part I of a lifelong goal achieved today!

Those who know our winter 2012 Alcan story know that we had to make the tough decision to leave the 1995 BMW M3 we brought up in Dawson City and ride shotgun with Kevin Barrows in sweep to Inuvik. Except, we only got as far as Eagle Plains as the Dempster was closed half way. From that day on, the allure of the Arctic Circle crossing, just a few kilometers further, and Tuktoyaktuk, just a day away, has always been on our minds.

Today, we got one step closer. A 4am wakeup and crazy, full nighttime push up the Klondike to Dempster Corner started the day off feeling like an adventure. Talk of a "hole in the road past the horse place" from a local set the tone for us, as they said the road was in marginal conditions but passable.

Onwards we went. The Dempster was not forgiving today. One of our cycle friends went down after Eagle Plains, narrowly avoiding a ditch and saving himself and the bike. The VW Rabbit was less lucky in the same spot a few hours later, a picture of it being rescued by a semi posted within our group chat later showed.

The whole highway was muddy, rutted, and in general, kinda just not great. But we stuck to our timing and powered through the day with minimal stops. The scenery on the Dempster is unreal, especially passing through Tombstone National Park. It's like another world!

Despite the 15 hour day, we arrived to Inuvik with our cycle friends in great spirits, and ready for our segment to Tuktoyaktuk in the morning!
